Gerald Duane Johnson was born on October 17, 1946 to K.C. and Maude Johnson in Naples, Texas. He attended and graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1965.

In 1966, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and deployed to Vietnam. After being wounded in combat, he was transferred to Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco, California to recuperate. After being released, he briefly returned to Texas but would soon return to California where he resided for a number of years. While back in California he worked for the US Postal Service and also as security for the San Francisco Giants.

In later years Gerald would return to Texas where he met his beloved friend and companion of 26 years, Patricia McGary.
Gerald loved nature and the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and also reading books. Gerald was best known for his sense of humor. He loved to joke and kid around, especially amongst family and friends.

Gerald was proceeded in death by his parents, K.C. and Maude Johnson; brothers, Bobbie Leroy Johnson, Jackie Lynn Johnson, Isaac Allen Johnson and Billie Joe Johnson.

He was survived by his beloved friend and companion, Patricia McGary; five sisters, Maurine Johnson and Patsi Donaldson of San Francisco, California, Dianne Adams of Hughes Springs, Texas, Gloria Johnson Boles and Lori Johnson of Rockmart, Georgia; two brothers, Ronnie T Johnson of Naples, Texas, Rocca Johnson of Daingerfield, Texas; and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives.
