Horace Jones was born May 26, 1944 in Hughes Springs to Byron and Beulah Jones. He passed away at his home on November 5th, 2023, surrounded by his family and close friends. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 9, 2023 at Cross Roads Missionary Baptist Church. Burial with Military Honors will immediately follow at Sardis Cemetery, under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs. Mr. Jones will lie in state from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday. Dr. Daniel McGuire and Bro. Jeremy Goodson will be officiating.

Horace was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. He graduated from Hughes Springs High School in 1962. Horace was drafted into the United States Army in February of 1969. While serving three tours in Vietnam, he earned the rank of Sergeant and worked as a Military Police K-9 Handler within the 981st Sentry Dog Unit and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in a combat zone. His pride for his country and the honor to have served was second only to the love he had for this family. In September 1970, two weeks after returning from Vietnam he began working at Lone Star Steel and retired in May 2003. He was an avid outdoorsman and could often be found in a flat bottom boat running trotlines on Sulphur River or squirrel hunting in the bottoms of Cass County.

Horace is survived by his wife of 60 years, Linda Davis Jones; three daughters, Penny & Steve Campbell, Paula & Roger Westmoreland and Mina & Brian Strickland, all of Hughes Springs; six grandsons, Brad & Liz Dooly of Marlin, Tx, Wil & Sunday Dooly of Ft. Riley, Kansas, Jeremy Westmoreland of Hughes Springs, Corky & Becca Westmoreland of Hughes Springs, Cameron Priddy of Lubbock, Tx, Chandler Priddy of Oklahoma City, Ok, and Megan & Michael Gibson of Clarksville, Ar.; sister, Diann Young of Marietta; and brother, Royce Jones of Hughes Springs; eleven great-grandchildren, Laynie, Bronx, Timber, Breckyn, Stetson, Charley, McKinley, Karter, Jake, Rhett & Emmy; sisters and brothers-in-law, Susan Vloedman, Suzanne Johnson, Charlie Howell, Doug, Bill, Sid and Ernest Burns. Horace will also be remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends.

Horace is preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons, Roger Jr. and Joseph Westmoreland; three brothers, Harold, Jimmy and Jerry Jones; and two sisters, Mary Beckett and Mattie Huffman.

Memorial donations may be made in his honor to Cypress Basin Hospice.
