Funeral services for Ms. Laura Jefferson, age 84, of Mesquite, Texas, will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Reeder-Davis Chapel. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park, under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs. Mrs. Jefferson will lie in state from 12:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 26, 2024 at the funeral home.
Laura Nell Jefferson was born to Zora Edney and Annie Laura Brown in Naples, Texas on April 16th, 1940. She attended Emmet Scott High School in 1958, and went on to study Physical Education at Texas College and later received her Masters in Physical Education at East Texas State University. She was an elementary school teacher in Dallas TX, for ten years. Eventually, she moved to San Bernadino, and later Carson, California with her son Emmanuel Paul Jefferson and proceeded to teach elementary school in Compton, San Bernadino and Carson, California for over thirty years.
After forty years of serving her community as a teacher, member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, and a member of the Compton Education Association. She eventually retired and moved back home to Texas where she enjoyed attending bible study, traveling, eating Blue Bell ice cream and spending quality time and sharing lots of laughs with her friends and family.
She is survived by her son, Paul Jefferson; the joy of her life and his wife Barbara Jefferson. Her two sisters, Marva Edney and Norma Royal; who brought her so much light and an endless amount of laughter (she would always refer to them as “my two nuts”). Her granddaughter Tamara Jefferson; who meant the world to her and a host of nieces and nephews who she loved very much.
