Virgie Chitwood Walker was born April 14, 1933, to Renfred and Stella Chitwood, and passed from this life on Friday, Feb. 6, 2026 at the age of 92. Virgie lived a long life devoted to her family, her church, and her community.
Virgie grew up in Loop, Texas along with her mother and three sisters after the untimely death of her father when she was 8. She enjoyed school activities and especially athletics. She first met Obie Walker while working in a local café in high school. They were married in 1950 and remained married until his death in 2009. They lived the first few years of married life in West Texas and eventually moved to Lone Star. A few years later, they settled in Hughes Springs, where she lived for most of the remaining years of her life. In her last two years, Virgie became a resident of Capstone Healthcare facility in Hughes Springs.
In addition to raising four children and being a faithful member of the Church of Christ, Virgie was always a dedicated worker. She worked in a pharmacy in Lone Star for several years and later started a home business selling fabric for clothing. She partnered with her lifelong best friend, Linnie Bryant, and together they opened Today’s Fabrics in Hughes Springs. Later, they purchased the Fashion Shoppe, a clothing store they owned and operated for over 20 years, where she was a well-known and active participant in the local business community. Virgie retired in 1998 but continued to live a fulfilling life surrounded by loving children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored.
Virgie, along with her sisters, spent many years caring for their mother in their home until her passing. She was also a devoted caregiver to her husband for 12 years after he suffered a series of debilitating strokes, until his passing in 2009. As her health deteriorated, she was cared for daily by her daughters and family along with the dedicated staff of Capstone and Hospice Plus.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Obie Walker; her son, Ronald James Walker; her parents Renfred and Stella Chitwood; and her sister, Marjorie Terry.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Elrod and husband Roger of Longview; her sons, Danny Walker and wife Karen of Woodstown, New Jersey, and Bobby Walker of Middleton, Pennsylvania; her daughter, Becky Craig and husband Jake of Lone Star, Texas, and Jane Walker of Hershey, PA; ten grandchildren, Krystal Elrod, Eric Elrod (Jill), Ryan Walker (Andrea), Jenni Greenfield (Adam), Katie Walker, Marsha Mallizzio (Tony), Ashley Walker (Edwardo), Hannah Fitch (James), Aaron Yeager (Sarah), and Sarah Yeager; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wanda Owens of Loop, Texas, and Freda McNew of Abernathy, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

We are so sorry for your loss. We pray God will surround you with his love and comfort.
Donna, I was so sorry to hear of the loss of your mom. She was such a beautiful, elegant lady. I remember going to the Fabric shop and being measured for dresses that she and Lynnie would make for my sisters and me. Those were wonderful days to think back on. Just one of my memories of this special “mom”. Prayers for your family during this difficult time.
Donna, I am so sorry about Virgie’s death. I spent many lunch hours at the Fashion Shop! I will keep you in my prayers.
