Gladys Trahan Organ was born October 8, 1938, in Orange, Texas, to Leroy and Bertie Trahan. She passed away August 18, 2026, in Gilmer, Texas.
Gladys married John “Tommy” Organ when they were both just 16 years old. From those young beginnings grew a marriage that lasted 71 years and a family that became the center of Gladys’s life. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother who poured herself into caring for her family and making a home for them wherever life happened to take them.
As Tommy’s work required the family to move through the years, Gladys had a way of settling everyone in and making each new place feel familiar. She was very involved in her children’s lives and activities and was always willing to help wherever she was needed. Among the many things she did over the years, Gladys taught Sunday school and helped with Boy Scouts. She was the kind of mother who was present, dependable, and always ready to do whatever needed to be done.
Gladys took great pride in her home and in the way she carried herself. She was always well put together and enjoyed keeping a beautiful, welcoming home. She was also an exceptional cook. When family came to visit, there was never any chance of leaving hungry. Gladys cooked enough to feed an army and was happiest when her house was full and everyone she loved was gathered together.
She especially enjoyed having her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews around. Summer visits could last for weeks, and Gladys made sure those days were filled with good food, fun, and memories. Many of the family’s favorite stories came from summers spent together along the Sabine River.
Gladys was thoughtful and generous in ways both big and small. She loved giving gifts, surprising people, and doing little things just to see someone smile. She seemed to have a special sense for knowing when someone needed something, often without them ever having to ask.
She had many interests of her own as well. Gladys was a talented bowler and collected numerous trophies over the years. In her younger days, she enjoyed gardening and fishing. She also loved animals of all kinds. They raised cows, and Gladys made sure each one had a name. When she decided the grandchildren needed Shetland ponies, it took a little convincing, but Tommy eventually gave in. The ponies became another special part of the memories the grandchildren made with them.
Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her tremendous joy, and she treasured every opportunity to have them close. To Gladys, family was meant to be together, and she worked throughout her life to make sure they had a place where they always felt welcome.
Her faith was a steady part of who she was. Gladys trusted that God would provide and often reminded her family that God would take care of their needs. That faith never wavered. She was a faithful member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Ore City.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, John “Tommy” Organ; her parents, Leroy and Bertie Trahan; and her siblings, Leroy Trahan Jr., Stanley Trahan, and Stella Trahan.
She is survived by her four children, Melba Hart and husband Floyd, John Organ and wife Kary, Carolyn Thornton and husband Dwayne, and Thomas Organ; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; her sister, Edith Gace; and a host of extended family members and friends.
