Martha Poteet

martha poteet
Martha Elizabeth Dean Poteet was born on December 8, 1926 in Madison County to John Wesley Dean and Delia Estelle Kay Dean. She entered her eternal home on May 20, 2016 at the age of 89.

She graduated from Madisonville High School in 1945 and worked at the Burtis Drugstore where she met the love of her life, Joseph Dean Poteet. They enjoyed a brief courtship and married on May 8, 1947.

Martha worked as a telephone operator while Joe attended Sam Houston University. She continued to work while Joe finished his Masters of Education degree from Stephen F. Austin University.

Martha and Joe had four children and settled after several moves in Navasota, TX.

Being a mother, wife and homemaker was her life and she excelled at them. No one could enter her home without feeling welcomed and well fed. She had the gift of hospitality.

When her children were all old enough to enter school, she went to cosmetology school and received her license. She and Joe built a beauty shop on the back of the house so she could be close to home and the family.

Martha was a woman who loved life, loved the Lord, and loved everyone she met.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Joseph Dean Poteet, her parents, and four siblings - Lemma Malone, Elmer Dean, Effie Burnett and John Dean.

She is survived by her four children: Jo Beth Fuller (Frank Majors) of Linden, TX; Morris Dean Poteet (Nancy Dailey) of Magnolia, TX; John Trax Poteet (Alice Moody Imhoff) of Navasota, TX; Sharon Clepper OConnor and her husband Patrick of McKinney, TX; seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and one sister Joyce Maness.

A memorial service will be held at Navasota UMC on June 10th at 10 am. Burial will be at Allphin Cemetery outside Madisonville, Texas at 1 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings can be made to the United Methodist Church of Navasota.
