Mary Joyce Gordon (Big Sister) was born February 8, 1952; the first born twin of Clara Mae (Rivers) Johnson. She passed away July 1, 2015 at her home in Omaha. She was reared by her grandparents B.C. and Sallie Rivers who instilled in her at an early age to work hard and clean up every day. Joyce was baptized at the Mt. Mitchell Church of Christ at an early age. Joyce graduated in 1972 from Daingerfield High School. After graduation Big Sister went to Jarvis Christian College and graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. Joyce taught elementary for 15 years in the Crockett and Killeen Independent School Districts. Joyce married Paul Gordon of Quitman, Texas in October 1978. Paul was a 1st Sergeant in the United States Army and took Joyce with him to Germany for three and a half years. She leaves to mourn, her mother, Clara Mae Johnson of Mt. Pleasant; her twin sister, Mary Jewel McGill of Omaha; Paul Gordon of Killeen; two sisters, Linda Kellum (Bobby) of Houston, Sheila Evans (Larry) of Pittsburg; three brothers, Joe Rivers Sr. (Myrtle-Sue) of Grand Prairie, Stanley Johnson (Von) of Sacramento, CA, Dennis Johnson (preceded in death); four nephews, Reginald Brown, Joe Rivers Jr, Jeremie Rivers, Bobby Kellum; four nieces, Chasity McKinney, DNyia Johnson, Charlene Johnson; and Taylor Johnson; three remaining aunts; and a host of cousins and relatives. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2015 at Mt. Mitchell Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Rivers Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs.
