Mary Larue Compton

Mary Larue Compton, known by all who loved her as MawMaw, died peacefully on April 7, 2014 at the age of 86. Larue was born in Hughes Springs, TX on January 23, 1928 to Horace Orville Fite and Mary Gladine Hull Fite. After graduating from Hughes Springs High School, Larue's family moved to Dallas to support the war effort. On April 18, 1947, she married the love of her life, James Wendell Compton. Together they made a life in Dallas, TX. She made a career as a secretary, first at Frye, Gregory & Linsteader, then British American Oil Co., and finally Deloitte, Haskins & Sells, subsequently Deloitte & Touche. Larue served the Lord teaching Sunday school for over 30 years and singing in the church choir at Wynnewood Baptist in Oak Cliff. An avid reader, crossword puzzle solver and Forty-Two player, Larue always entertained those around her with her charming wit. Often described as a woman with a colorful personality, Larue enjoyed bringing laughter and happiness to her family and friends. Her children will always remember "Letters from Mom", special holidays and the rousing family gatherings sharing stories; her grandchildren will never forget the many movie nights, gin rummy tournaments and Lincoln Log forts. Though she will be greatly missed, her family takes comfort in the knowledge they will see her again one day. Larue is survived by two children, daughter, Dena Compton-Devoto and her "FSL" Earl of Dallas, and son, James Wendell Compton, Jr. of Plainfield, IL; three grandchildren, Adam James Compton and fianc Gina Vangelisti of Dallas, Shannon Lynn Lawson and husband Jacob of Houston, TX, and Hunter Christian Compton of Dallas; four step-grandchildren, Laura Devoto-Chewning, husband KC and children Samantha and Ian, Andrea Carroll Evans, husband Jason and son Lucas, Kara Leigh Devoto and Matthew Earl Devoto; numerous brothers and sisters-in law, nieces and nephews. Larue is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, James Wendell Compton, both parents and a younger brother, Orville Fite. The family will receive visitors at Laurel Land Funeral Home from 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday, April 9. Graveside service will be Thursday, April 10, 1 pm, Hughes Springs Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs.
