A beloved father was called home to be with his Lord on March 15, 2014. He was loved as Steve to his many friends and Grandpa to his grandchildren and great granddaughter. James Stephen Karbowski was born on January 29, 1922, in Galveston, Texas. He grew up in Galveston County and attended schools in Galveston. He married Doris M. Johnson in 1941. He proudly served his country in the US Army Air Force during World War II, January 1943 - December 1945. Steve and his wife, Doris, settled in LaMarque, Texas and raised a family of two sons. He was a production supervisor at Union Carbide Chemical Corporation in Texas City, Texas. He thrived on meeting the challenges of his position and took pride in performing his job always to the best of his ability. He was an Assistant Scout Master in support of his sons' Boy Scout troop for several years in LaMarque, Texas. After retiring from Union Carbide, Steve was active in the Jenkins Methodist Church, serving as superintendent of Sunday School, on the board of trustees and various committees. His retirement years were spent in Daingerfield, Longview and Rockwall, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles H. and Jeannette Karbowski; his wife of 68 years, Doris, and two brothers, Karl and Otto Karbowski; three sisters, Charlotte Solomon, Jeannette Bradford and Margaret Goode. He is survived by two sons; Steve and daughter-in-law Barbara of Quinlan; Ted and daughter-in-law Helen of Asheboro, North Carolina; four granddaughters, two great-grandchildren, and will be missed by his many nieces and nephews. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Reeder-Davis Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Irving officiating. A family visitation will be held from 5 until 7 on Tuesday evening, March 18, 2014 at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Clark Cemetery in Jenkins, Texas under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home of Hughes Springs. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent Jenkins United Methodist Church at the following address: Dave Ronchetto, Treasurer Jenkins United Methodist Church 233 County Rd. 2223 Daingerfield, TX 75638.
