Nadine Lyon

nadine lyon
Nadine Lyon, 92, of Hughes Springs never had any children, but she had become the matriarch of her church and in some ways, of her beloved Hughes Springs. Her life came to an end Thursday, July 25 at a Longview hospital, after a short illness. She was born September 5, 1920 in Wellington, Texas to Green and Eula Cockrill Parsons and the family moved to Hughes Springs in 1938. Soon afterward, she and her husband, the late John Lyon, established and operated Lyons Caf in Hughes Springs. Except for Mr. Lyons three-year service in World War II, the Lyons ran their caf continuously until Johns death in 1977. The couple also provided meals for Steed Hospital, also in Hughes Springs. Mrs. Lyons contributions to her community included actively serving decades on the Hughes Springs Cemetery board, where among other things she facilitated planting of many beautiful crepe myrtles throughout. She was a charter member and former president of Red Radiance Garden Club. Even in her nineties, she was known to be the local go-to lady for raising funds for worthwhile civic , church and various other charitable projects. Until her death she oversaw the St. Stephens Fund for her church, which existed to help the needy. Also this proud lady never resigned as president of her Sunday School class after decades in that capacity. She ran a tight ship in all her endeavors, while keeping her home immaculate till the end. She is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation for Frances Nadine Lyon will be 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, July 28 at Reeder-Davis Funeral Home, Inc. in Hughes Springs. Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Hughes Springs, with Pastor Heidi Cain officiating. Burial will follow at Hughes Springs Cemetery.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. My grandfather took me to Lyons cafe from the time I was 3 yrs old until John Lyon died in 1977 for 13 years. We ate lunch everyday and were greeted by Nadine and John. She always said hello Mr. Jack and Johnsy. John Lyons taught me to squirrel hunt and took me hunting with him and his squirrel dogs from 1974 till 1976. Nadine always had to have a kiss when I came to eat at the diner with my grandfather Mr. Jack Kenna. I will miss her, I know she and John are together now, GOD BLESS Nadine Lyon.

  2. She was a mover and a shaker, a go to person that made things happen. We were lucky to have her in all of her endevers. We will remember her always. May she rest in peace.

  3. What a woman, and what a life! She is one of the kind of role models that should be emulated because strong love is also tough love. Tough is a good word for a lady who drove herself to wherever she wanted to go, and I never heard her complain. God truly went where she was.
