Services for Florence Royal, 88, of Hughes Springs, will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Reeder-Davis Chapel. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs.
Mrs. Florence Marie Edwards Royal (“Maw”) of Hughes Springs, Texas, was born on February 28, 1929, in Cass County, Texas, to the parentage of Mr, Andy Edwards and Mrs. Annie Edwards.
Florence was raised and educated in Cass County, Texas. She was saved at an early age and was an active member of Love Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
She married Mr. Everett Royal on July 1, 1948 and raised seven children, Joe Everett Royal (deceased), Janice Edwards (Andrew), Nina Phillips (Greg), Phyllis Royal-Brown, LaDonna Jackson, Nelwyn Royal, and Timothy Royal. Additionally, she is survived by three sisters, Mattie Holloman, Myra Hatten, and Vallie Newsome; and has several grand- and great-grandchildren.
Florence owned and operated her own Beauty Parlor. After her children grew up, she worked as a cashier at several stores in Hughes Springs, Daingerfield, and Lone Star. She continued to pursue her education by attending college in Texarkana, Paris, and Mount Pleasant, TX.
Throughout her life, she has received many awards, recognitions and commendations. One special recognition to note occurred in 2004. Florence was awarded the Hughes Springs Chamber of Commerce’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Florence had an unwavering sense of faith and strong selfless beliefs. Music was a key part of her life. She started playing music at four years old. She was a musician at Hughes Chapel (Hughes Springs), Rock Island (Lake of the Pines), and New Jerusalem Baptist Church (Daingerfield), and played at many numerous other churches and functions. Additionally, she passionately visited, sang, and cared for the sick at Theron Grainger Nursing Home in Hughes Springs. One of her greatest joys was playing at the 90th birthday party of Mr. Mayo Kasling, President of First National Bank.
In addition to caring for her family and tending to her garden, Florence was an avid community servant. She worked the voter registration polls for numerous years, was an active member of the Hughes Springs Auxiliary, Sesame Club, was on the Hughes Spring ISD committee to build the first Junior High school, as well as a tutor for Hughes Springs Elementary School (1994 – 1995), was a member of the Hughes Springs Housing Authority (1995 – 2000), Northeast Texas Baptist Association musician, and Hughes Springs Public Library, just to name a few.
The Lord is near. May God touch you in ways that no one else can and with the tendernes that only He can bring. You and your family are in our prayers. Love you!

Condolences to the family of Mrs. Florence Royal. I knew Sister Florence as a kind soul, and as the church musician at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. (where she will, no doubt, be missed). May the Lord be with the family throughout this difficult time, and may she rest in peace in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Sure hated to hear this about Mrs. Florence, she was a wonderful lady for sure. Her and my Mom Ruby Morris did the Ladies Auxiliary together. She is a Very Blessed Angel. Prayers be with you Nelwyn and family!
