Mertie Spearman, affectionately known as “Sister” departed this life on February 10, 2019, and now rest in the arms of our Lord and Savior Christ.
Mertie was born on October 24, 1930 to the late Willie and Bunies Spearman. At an early age she accepted Christ and joined the Methodist Church. She attended WRS United Methodist Church up until she became ill.
She attended Central High School in Jefferson, Texas. Although she valued education, she dropped out of school in the eleventh grade to assist her parents on the farm, and to help care for her younger siblings. She truly believed in putting her family first. Everyone that knew her could attest to her love for her family. Her handy-work could be seen in cooking, cleaning, tending to the house, and the family entrusted her with the name “Sister”. She ensured that all the children’s homework was completed, and was always very loving and patient with the kids. As a result of her efforts, three of her younger siblings finished Valedictorian from Victory High School and two finished in the top ten of their class. Later, Mertie would work just as hard making sure her own daughter, Nancy, and nephews Robert, Cleothis, and Charles did well in school.
Subsequently she moved to Houston and then to Dallas. She realized a need for more self- improvement and obtained her GED in July 1982 and later enrolled in El Centro Community College Dallas, Texas and earned her Nurse’s Aide and Medication Aide certification while she worked at C. C. Young Nursing facility. In 1983 her mother had a stroke and she moved back to Mims, Texas to care for her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Spearman Esq. Washington DC; sisters, Rose, Tennie, and Betty; uncle, Nash Hines; brothers, Bill, Robert, Larry, Herman, Ezekiel, James, Charles; sister, Cleo preceded her in death; she leaves behind a host of nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great nieces, cousins, and friends.
Dear Nancy. I so wish I could be there to hold your hand during this most difficult time in our life. Over the years, We have prayed and talked about your mother, her illness and her faith. But what always stood out, was your dedication to your mother and your commitment to her care. You are indeed a credit to daughters everywhere. May God’s light shine on you and your memories of the years you had your mother give you joy.
Praying for my dear sister Nancy and her family during their time of grief. Ms Sister lived a great long life and I know she is super proud of her daughter as her character speaks volumes of the way she was raised.
