Jack Clinton Bailey, 84, of Linden TX, passed away peacefully with family by his side. Jack grew-up on Willow Street in Austin, TX, where he learned to hunt and fish, raised championship winning sheep, and hustled selling drinks at UT football games. Jack was a 1954 graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Texas A and M University (1959), a Masters of Science (1965) and Doctor of Philosophy
(1967) from Mississippi State University, all in entomology. Following graduation from A and M, Jack began his career investigating the insect pest of citrus plants at the Texas A and M Research Lab at Weslaco, TX. He retired from the USDA-ARS at Stoneville, MS.
He married Maybell, the love of his life, on July 22, 1961. During their 59 year marriage Maybell and Jack called Weslaco, TX, Starkville, MS, Leland MS and Linden, TX home. In 1995, Jack and Maybell moved to Linden, TX and joined First Baptist Church, Linden, where they spent their retirement serving their Lord and community.

Jack is preceded in death by his wife, Maybell Abernathy Bailey, his parents, Ella Mae Sanders Bailey and Landrum Littlepage Bailey, and his brother, William Coleman Bailey.

He is survived by his two sons, Jack Clinton Bailey, II (Nicole) of Clinton, MS and Brian Alden Bailey (Carol) of Edwards, MS. His four grandchildren, Jack Clinton Bailey, III, Benjamin Glenn Bailey, Olivia Grace Bailey, and Ella Elizabeth Bailey, lovingly called him “Pops”. His numerous surviving nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews knew him as “Uncle Jack” no matter the relationship. Jack leaves a legacy of love for his Savior and family. One of his greatest joys was supporting his grandchildren by attending their various activities. He will be greatly missed.

Guestbook

  1. To Brian, Clinton, Nicole, and Family, so sorry for your loss. Dr. Bailey was a great gentleman, friend, and neighbor.

  2. The stories my mother would tell about her cousin Jack growing up, I would always seek him out at the Sanders/Bailey Thanksgiving reunions to get his version. He was always so easy to talk to, super intelligent yet humble and full of joy. I was devastated to get my mother's call about his passing. My prayers are with the family, Jack is in good company.

  3. Clinton and Brian, we just learned of your parents passing. I have been remiss in staying in contact with them. We are so sorry. Your parents were always so good to us. We pray for you and families. We would surely like to speak to you all. My number is 512-961-2839.
