Hattie Ann Carter

Hattie Ann Carter was born in Daingerfield, TX on May 1, 1930, to the late Bishop Sham Mason and Virginia Cleora Hood. She attended Mt Zion Elementary and Mt Moriah Jr High where she excelled in all her subjects and served as a class officer.  She continued her education at JJ Rhoads High school.

She was the fourth child born into the Mason family.  She grew up in a Christian home where moral values, hard work and a love for God were instilled in her.  Growing up in a household with five other siblings, she developed her skills in baking, nurturing, and house cleaning.

She later met and married Winfred Lee Carter and to this union there were eight children, one preceded her in death.

She worked many years at the Mt. Pleasant Hospital, but the tenure of her work experience was as a custodian at West Elementary where she was affectionately known as MISS HATTIE!  She joined the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where she served faithfully for over fifty years. She served as President of the Usher Board for 40+ years, and she also worked with the kitchen staff and the benevolence committee.

She was a pillar of the community and often visited the sick and shut-in. She was well-known for her baking skills and she was famous for her peanut butter cookies, sugar cookies, sweet milk icing cake and German Chocolate cake.

Last but not least Mother Carter was a fashion diva who styled the latest church hats, church suits, shoes and jewelry.

She was preceded in death by:  her parents Bishop Sham Mason, Virginia Cleora Hood, and Leona Mason, her husband Winfred Lee Carter, her son Breanard Carter, her siblings, Elizabeth Bell Bryson, John(Buddy) Mason Sr., and Bishop Mason Jr., grandchildren Paul Watson Jr. and Corey Peel.

She leaves to cherish her memories: sons, Bishop Paul Watson (Stella), Charles Mason, Kenneth Carter (Kellye), daughters, Queen Wilson (Curtis), Cherron Smith (Tony), Carolyn Traylor (OJ), LaSondia DeBase (Dan Michael).

She also leaves to cherish her sisters Mary Britt & Mattie Edney. Sister in laws, Jean Mason, Vivian Betts, Ouida Hatten, & Lillian Grimes; 27 Grandchildren, 22 Great Grand Children and 6 Great-Great Grand Children, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends  One special nephew Clarence Frazier and a special niece Stephanie Loretta McGill

Muh’s Pearls of Wisdom were:

”Right always win”,  “The Lord knows best”,  “Put in an honest day’s work and leave no question on the table”, “If you be good then good things will come to you”, “A warning comes before destruction” and “Be sweet and not bitter”.

Muh loved to sing “I always feel like somebody’s watching me!”, and may she watch over each and every one of us as her legacy continues to live within us.
