Barbara, who loved to be called Granny by those who knew her, departed her loving family to join our Father in Heaven on October 9, 2021. It was the kind of day she loved. There was a slight breeze, and fall was in the air. The leaves were turning colors, the goldenrods were emerging, and the red lilies in full bloom were surrounded by beautiful yellow butterflies.
A memorial service for Barbara will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Reeder-Davis Funeral home in Ore City with Brothers Tony Pierce and Leonard Nichols officiating. A private family burial will follow at Simmons Cemetery.
Barbara was born to Raymond and Minnie on August 2, 1942 in Altoona, Alabama and was preceded in death by her husband, Lester E. Tice. She is survived by her loving children, son Vinson and wife Francis, daughter Elizabeth and husband Ed, daughter Debi and Troy, and her grandchildren Christina and husband Justin, Michael and wife Gayla, Shawn and wife Jenna, and Amber. She was also gifted with the joy of great-grandchildren, Heather, Evan, Savannah, Ethan, Logan, Anise, Adrian, Ariel, and Allen.
Barbara lived her life defying the odds and without adhering to traditional norms. Having lost her entire family before she was 16 years old, she forged an independent path that led her down many divergent roads. She was an incredible mother to her three children. She worked as a photo technician and other jobs while raising her children with her husband. Barbara was a devoted mother and “Granny”. Her coconut cream pie is legendary, but her peanut butter fudge remains a family mystery. Her family may have the recipe, but they have yet to conquer the timing for adding the milk.
Barbara was the premier example of what it means to have a strong work ethic. Never afraid of hard work, she put great energy into each of her jobs. After the death of her husband, she took a job as a chainsaw operator on a logging crew and moved on to the lumber mill in Domino, Texas and worked as a knuckle boom operator. Following her time with International Paper, she went on to explore the United States from the cab of an 18-wheeler. In her later years, she owned and operated a ceramics business with her daughter, Elizabeth, and worked as an office administrative assistant.
She taught her children and grandchildren a love for life. She was a steward of the earth who loved to garden, camp, fish, and travel. She took great delight in the world of art and shared her view of the world through her photography and painting.
Barbara touched many over the course of her life, and loved with an open heart. She will be missed greatly.
