Amanda Hill

amanda hill
Amanda Green Hill, lovingly known as Big Mama to family and friends, was born September 5, 1919 to Oscar Green and Lela Johns on the Boyd Farm in Cass County, Texas. She grew up in Naples, Texas and left school at an early age to care for her ailing mother and younger siblings. She accepted Christ at an early age. On July 6th, 1937 Amanda married Roscoe Hill and to this union five children were born. She joined Unionville Missionary Baptist Church and served faithfully until 1969 when the family moved to Texarkana, TX. After joining Union Hill Baptist Church, Amanda served in various positions including Sunday School teacher and chair of the Ruth Circle until her health failed. Amanda worked in food service, housekeeping, and retail while raising her family. She enjoyed talking, taking care of others, reading and Bible study. Though she left school at an early age and was mostly self taught, Amanda was well versed on most topics. She was honored for voting in every regular election from the time she was of age until her health failed. She was also instrumental in founding the food service union at Lone Star Ammunition Plant. However, Amanda would say her greatest accomplishments are the love of her family and friends and her salvation from Our Heavenly Father. In the late evening of October 18, 2015, Amanda departed this life. Those who preceded her in death were: husband, Roscoe Hill, Sr. ; daughters, Pearline Hill (infant) and Yvonne Hill McCaney; son, Estes Dwayne Hill; brothers, Govan Johns, James King, Emmanuel Green (her twin); and granddaughter, Yolanda Hill. She leaves to cherish her memory: three sons, Roscoe (Gussie) Hill, Jr. of Wake Village, Texas, Bobby Joe (Brenda) Hill of Columbus, Ohio, Reverend D. A. (Loretta) Hill of Daingerfield, Texas; sister, Dinah Hill of Bellville, Illinois; sister-in-law, Helen Smith of Dallas; grandchildren, Jacqueline McCaney, Diana Matlock, Yolanda McCaney, Sabrina Roberson, Felicia Turrentine, Eric Hill, Emiel Hill, Teresa Hill, Tim Cornelius, Donna Hill, Kenneth Dolberry, Phil Hooper, Lisa Hill, Tiffany Dowden, and DeAundre Hill; 32 great-grandchildren; 18 great great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Services for Ms. Hill will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 24, 2015 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. D.A. Hill officiating. Burial will follow at Morning Star Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs. Ms. Hill will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
