Andrew Edwards

Andrew Dee Edwards, Jr. was born to Andrew Dee Edwards, Sr. and Marie Harise Edwards on April 3, 1948 in Atlanta, TX.

He graduated from the prestigious Booker T. Washington High School, class of 1966.  Bird (his nickname) shared many good memories and stories of his childhood and kept lifelong friendships that follow him to this day.  After graduation, he attended Texarkana College, in pursuit of a General Business degree.

In 1968, Andrew enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed in Wichita Falls, TX, Oklahoma City, OK, and Okinawa, Japan.  He often told stories of all the friends he met in the military, and how much fun he had trying burritos and pizza for the first time with his diverse bunkmates.

On returning from the military, Andrew met the love of his life in 1973, Janice Kay Royal Edwards from Hughes Springs, TX.  Janice was college roommates with Diana Williams, and Diana and John Williams, Jr. lived across the street from Andrew.  The rest is history.  Janice and Andrew married in May 1975 and have two legacies – Dr. Layla Edwards, MD (Fort Worth, TX) and Kamilah Edwards (Fort Worth, TX).

As a lifelong learner, Andrew continued to pursue his formal education and graduated with an Associate degree in Middle Management from Amarillo College in 1982.

Andrew retired from a career as a US Postal Mailhandler and held numerous leadership positions across every post office where he was stationed.  He served as the local Chairperson of the Affirmative Action Committee where he developed Equal Employment Opportunity guidelines for recruiting potential employees.  He also prepared and taught Postal Entrance Examination Review sessions for potential employees to successfully pass their exams.

As in life, Andrew Modeled the Way for those around him as he led from within any church he attended and any organization he served.

He was preceded in his homegoing by his father and mother, Andrew, Sr. and Marie, and sisters Ira Sue Nelson and Patricia Ann Edwards.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Edwards, legacies Dr. Layla Edwards, MD and Kamilah Edwards, his sister Dorothy Jean Dawson, as well as a host of family-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.  All will miss him dearly.

Services for Mr. Edwards will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2023 at Reeder-Davis Chapel. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs.
