Arthur Jones

Arthur L. “Pokey” Jones was born to the parents of Fannie Connally and Jodie Jones in Daingerfield, Texas. He attended J.J. Rhoads High School and graduated in 1964. Pokey was very athletic and played football, basketball and was a member of the high school band. In 1980, Pokey married the love of his life, Martha and to this union no children were born. He was blessed to help raise a step-granddaughter, Jamille “Pumpkin” Kelly. In his later years, his love for sports contributed to him becoming a huge football, basketball and track fan. He would travel to Austin each year to the Texas Relays to meet up with his best friend. Most Sundays, you could find him glued to his “favorite recliner” wearing a football jersey while watching the sports channel.

Pokey was baptized at New Hope Baptist Church at a young age and attended Faith Temple Church of God in Christ until his health declined. He worked in the insurance industry over 40 years and retired after many years of service. In his spare time, he prepared taxes for his family and friends. He also loved to cook, and his specialty was grilling barbeque with adding his “special sauce” on the side, as well as playing dominoes with his friends. In the early 90s he became a member of the Piney Woods Civic Club, which he and others donated their time to the elderly to ensure they had fans during the summer months.

Pokey was preceded in death by his mother, father, one sister, one brother, a daughter and his beloved wife of 37 years. He leaves to cherish his memory a host of other relatives and friends.

The Jones family would like to thank you for being with us during this time of sorrow and for your prayers which mean so much to us. Special thanks to Reeder-Davis Funeral Home, Hughes Springs, Texas.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Worked with Pokey at Kilpatrick Life Insurance. He was a very nice guy, always had a smile on his face for everyone. I loved his saying that he told the other salespeople that were not producing like they should be. "Have to be walking & talking, not riding & driving" He also told this to all the new salespersons.

  2. So sorry Pokey had to leave this world in this sad time of Social Distancing missed the delicious BBQ that he always shared.

  3. Prayers extended to the family. My memories of Pokey range from the time he used to come to house to collect the Insurance Money. My Mother said she could depend on Pokey to come and collect on time so her Insurance on all of us would not lapse! He was always smiling and I believe God is smiling now. May you continue to be comforted.

  4. My heart is sadden to here of your transitioning bro in law l pray that God will give your family peace in the midst of the storm.

  5. My condolences to the family. I'll never forget our days of our families growing up in the Rhoads High School area of Daingerfield. I can't count the number of times I came over to your house (as your sister Jean and I were good friends) You, of course, was a good friend of my brother Jim. You will be missed here on earth, but I am sure you are resting in the arms of our Heavenly Father. Until we meet again, I'll just say, "Rest easy, my friend". God bless.

  6. My sincere condolences to the family, friends, especially classmates and neighbors of Arthur Lee Jones. My sister, Barbara Young Johnson and my aunt Lillie Ruth Young Winston (classmate) have found memories of growing up together, going to JJ Rhoads HS together and being neighbors. May "Pokey" rest in eternal heavenly Peace. Emmett and Dorrie Young "Chee "Chee" Aldrich.

  7. Rest in peace old friend! We were childhood playmates, school classmates (1952-1964), and eternal friends. You were "blessed by The Best"! A gifted athlete and scholar, Pokey set standards that inspired contemporaries and shaped future generations. Many athletes who earned recognition at Daingerfield High School and the NFL can trace success to the football teams that began play at J. J. Rhoads High in 1960. Pokey's leg was broken in 1960 and thus ended his football career. No problem, he excelled at basketball and baseball! Faked out one's jockey-strap became a reality if you tried to defend his fast breaks. In baseball, he would have two hits in three plate appearances then take the ball as relief pitcher to close-out the game. Most people are aware Deon Sanders and Bo Jackson earned recognition in two professional sports. I'm convinced a broken leg interrupted his destiny as a possible three-sport athlete.

  8. To Our family, words will never be able to replace or express the hurt that you are feeling, from the absence of your beloved one, but one thing I do know for sure, that it is appointed for man to live and to die, and after that the judgement shall come. I believe that our beloved Aurhur lived a life that spoke as the song writer wrote. I'm going live so God can use me any where Lord any time, so be encorage family, that if we live so God can use us any where Lord any time. Then we to will see our beloved one on the other side, for it is our prayer that God will grant you all, the perfect peace that surpasses all understanding, that guards your hearts and your minds. Doing this time and the days ahead. We love You Family 👪 Amen. Ardie & Mona Mims Rodgers Family.

  9. It is with great sadness that I express these words of condolences to the family of Arthur Lee (Pokey) Jones. I am so sadden to hear of his passing. Pokey and I were classmates for many years. He was a great athlete, friendly, talented, kind and smart. Most of all, Pokey was my Senior Prom Escort at Joseph J. Rhoades High School on May 8, 1964. We had a wonderful time. I will not forget him. To his family: May God grant you courage, strength and comfort in the difficult days ahead. Pokey, rest in peace my good friend.
