Betty Jean Shelton passed away August 24, 2017, in her home surrounded by the people she loved. She was born on April 3, 1933, in Hughes Springs, Texas, to George and Grace Rowe. She attended school in Hughes Springs and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.  During her senior year she was a cheerleader, Senior favorite, and Best All Around. After graduating high school in 1950, she worked at Lone Star Steel. In 1952, she married the love of her life, W.C. (Dub) Shelton. They had one son, Rick, and twin girls, Nan and Jan. From 1983 to 1992, she worked doing various jobs for The Bee newspaper. She loved playing the piano, sewing, decorating her house on Hickory Street, and listening to country music. She especially loved her four grandchildren, Rodney, Ricky, Shelby, and Trent. After retiring from The Bee, she took care of her younger two grandchildren for 14 years. In her later years she loved to sit on her porch, look at her beautiful flowers, and check for any unusual or usual activity in the neighborhood.

She is preceded in death by her parents, George Franklin Rowe and Grace Odell Rowe; her husband, W.C. (Dub) Shelton;  her sister, Euneve Simmons and brother-in-law George Simmons; her brother, George F. Rowe Jr.; and niece, Sharon Simmons.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I have so many found memories growing up around Mrs Betty and the family. Mama, Norma Clark, enjoyed her friendship through the years and asked me to send you all her love and let you know you are in her prayers.

  2. Mom (Nell Barnett), says she and Betty were friends since before Rick was born. And then our families were neighbors for more years than I can remember. Mom, Karen, and I love you all. Betty will be missed. I am sitting here this morning smiling at so many great memories. Prayers for strength through this difficult time.

  3. Robyn, I saw you drive by last Wednesday evening and thought you were on your way out of town. But saw you drive into Reeder Davis. I am so very sorry for your families loss. My sincere condolences.

  4. Jan, I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I had only met your mom twice, but it was of the most memorable meeting I had ever had. She was kind, funny, caring and full of spunk! What a treasure. Love, Karla Briggs

  5. Nanny Betty was one of a kind. She loved my child as if he were her grandchild and because of that she will always have a special place in my heart!

  6. Betty was such a special lady. I loved her so much, and she will be missed. I wish I was able to be there to say good-bye, but my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Heaven gained another angel. Fly high, Betty. Love to all, Shane Dean Lauderdale

  7. You were always a sweet, loving, and vivacious lady and you will certainly be missed. Love and blessings to the family and may the peace of God be yours during this time of remembering and morning.
