Dora Bess O’Dell Sloan went to be with her Lord and loved ones on May 28, 2018. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 31, 2018, at Western Hills Church of Christ in Fort Worth, Texas. There will be a time of visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Thursday and lasting until service time. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Hughes Springs, Texas under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home. Dora once lived across the street and, as a child, played at the site of the cemetery when it was a pine grove.
Dora was born in Hughes Springs, Texas on July 21, 1930, to Sam and Jessie Mae O’Dell. Most of her childhood years were spent there and she graduated from Hughes Springs High School in 1947. She graduated from Federal Institute of Business in Tyler in 1949. It was in Tyler that she met Glynn, the “love of her life.” They were married in 1951 in Hughes Springs. Most of their married life was spent in Fort Worth.

Dora was a secretary at General Dynamics (now Lockheed-Martin) for ten years and resigned to raise their two great children. In later years, she was employed at United Services Planning Association, Inc. (now Command) and retired after ten years of service. She was a faithful and loving wife, mother, great-grandmother, and Christian. She was known as “Gran” by her grandchildren. Dora was a member of the Western Hills Church of Christ for 54 years. She loved people and kept a smile on her face at all times for everyone she met. She enjoyed making quilts, cross-stitching, sewing, traveling, growing flowers, singing with the church group at funerals, and spending time on the computer with her prized children and grandchildren. She was literally Glynn’s right arm after the loss of his right arm in 1992 from an auto accident.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Sam and Jessie Mae O’Dell; brother, Delmar O’Dell; and sister, Martha Rust.

Survivors include her husband Glynn of 67 years; son, Chadric Todd Sloan and wife, Debbie of Mesquite; daughter, Glynna Melissa Phillips and husband Dave of Watauga; grandchildren, Jade Cote' Faulk, Austin Poynter, Madison Poynter, and Kayleigh Sloan; great-grandchild, Remington Faulk; sisters-in-law, Harriette O’Dell of Kennedale and Beatrice Chambers of Elkhart; brother-in-law, Harold Sloan and wife Mabel of Crosby; four special nieces, Sheree Thomas, Gina Noel, Marlene Watkins, Carla Barnes; three special nephews, John O’Dell, Gary Rust, and Sammie Rust; and numerous other relatives and friends.
