Emily Ruth Screws, affectionately known as Ms. Ruth by many, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2022 after a brief illness. She was a member of First Baptist Church Hughes Springs where she belonged to the Joy Sunday School Class and enjoyed walking with her friends in the Christian Life Center. She was born in Sardis, Alabama to Alfred and Verlie Brooks and married the love of her life, Floyd Screws, on February 1, 1951. She spent the early years of marriage as a military wife, and lived in several U.S. states as well as a brief time in the Panama Canal Zone. During those early years when Floyd was away serving his country, she remained at home to maintain a loving, supportive atmosphere for their family. She was a strong, independent woman who overcame a cancer diagnosis in her late thirties, and went on to live a healthy life for more than 50 additional years. She dedicated her time to family, and did not work outside the home until the kids were older. She then went to work at Grogan’s Supply, which later became Trico Lumber Company. She loved her Trico family and was employed there for about 30 years. She also worked hard to support Floyd on their farm, and they were both honored with the “Region IV Resident Conservation Rancher” award for 2002 by the Soil and Water Conservation District of Texas. She was adored by family and friends. Her nurturing personality and selfless attitude made everyone feel welcome and loved. She never hesitated to help a friend in need. She was a tremendous cook and well known for her delicious homemade cheesecake. Ruth quietly enjoyed college football and was an avid Alabama football fan – “Roll Tide!” However, her most beloved role was MeMe to her five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren whom she adored. From band recitals and orchestra concerts to high school sports and college basketball, MeMe was their number one fan and was very proud of all their endeavors. She will be remembered for her incredibly sweet personality and the kindness she was always willing to extend to everyone. Ruth was preceded in death by her loving husband, Floyd Screws; parents Alfred and Verlie Brooks; brothers Thomas, Kenneth and Donald Brooks; and sister Sarah McKinney. She is survived by daughter Donna (Kerry) Wilson of Carrollton, TX; son Barry (Janice) Crews of Longview, TX; grandchildren Jeff (Danielle) Wilson, Phillip (Katie) Wilson, Amanda (Austin) Ashley, Landon Crews, Grayson Crews; great-grandchildren Ethan Wilson, Vivienne Wilson, Rush Ashley, Taytum Ashley; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
