George Weldon Hampton went to his eternal home with our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, after a short battle with multiple health issues. His mind remained sharp until the end and he assisted workers with information as needed. He fought his battle valiantly with few complaints and many compliments and words of appreciation to all those taking care of him, including the doctors.
George was born at home in the Cornett Community (ask Ima Jean) on September 14, 1929, to George William and Zelma Ruth Hampton. He was the sixth of ten children born to this union. According to his sister, he had to “grow up fast” because, his mother died when George was eleven years old. He had to work just like his older siblings to help Papa with the farm work and also provide care to his infant twin brothers. Out of necessity he not only learned to drive the tractor to haul Cotton to the Cotton Gin in Marietta but also learned to drive the old family car in which he took neighbors to the Doctor and varied other transportation needs. He also picked cotton just like the older children. He was taught the traits of good work ethics, integrity, and lending a helping hand to others from an early age. These traits stayed with him all his life and he passed them on to his sons by his example. But he also made sure that his sons had a chance to be kids, as well.
George Weldon was saved at age eighteen, at Cornett Methodist Church. He chose to be baptized rather than sprinkled, which was the customary method.
After graduating high school, George Weldon joined the Armed Forces for four years, splitting time in the Navy and Army. He was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, during the clean up after World War II in a Tank Brigade and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He became the personal driver for his Colonel because of his integrity and ability to solve problems as they presented. On his return to the Hughes Springs area, he hired on at Lone Star Steel, working in the Open-Hearth Furnace. This area was known for being extremely hot and hard work, but he managed to handle the job for more than thirty years. In addition to his shift work at the Plant, in between shift changes and on days off, George Weldon worked on his farm, raising cattle and horses, and operating bulldozers for the public; always working to provide the best life he could for his family. He was married to Pansy Armstrong in 1954. To this union was born two sons, James Weldon and Michael Anthony. The marriage dissolved and, in 1987, George Weldon married Margie McDaniel. They were happily married until 2007 when Margie passed away. Since then, George Weldon lived alone and concentrated on helping his sons, grandchildren, and others who needed help. He continued to bale hay and be a “shade tree mechanic” until he was ninety.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George William Hampton and Zelma; wife, Margie Marie Hampton; son, Raymond Mike Wellborn; three brothers, Morris Hampton, Lawrence Hampton, Robert (Tuff) Hampton; two sisters, Annie Crossland and Evelyn Jacobs.
George Weldon is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Sharon Hampton of Hughes Springs, TX, Weldon and Cindy Hampton of Oxford, NC; one daughter, Anna Mathis of Hughes Springs, TX; seven grandchildren, Darcy Drake (Alex), Austin Hampton, Travis Hampton (Pooja), Jenna Long (Jeff), Jarrod Hampton, Sam Hampton (Savannah), Dana Kelley (Stone); great-grandchildren, Annie, Vivie, Lexi, Georgie, Mitchell, Shep, Norah; two sisters, Ima Jean Davis and Laverne Vaughan; two brothers, Alvis Hampton and Auvis Hampton.
