Gertrude Viola Higgins

Gertrude Viola Higgins, of Hughes Springs passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2013. She was born July 28, 1920 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Thomas and Hazel Hurst. She married Lemuel C. Higgins on August 27, 1944 and graduated from Kilgore High School. Mrs. Higgens attended Kilgore Junior College, where she received an Associates Degree in Accounting. She worked many years as an accountant with McMillian Motor Company as well as the Hughes Springs Ambulance Service and Hughes Springs Housing Authority. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, as well as, an active member of Hughes Springs Chapter 349, Order of the Eastern Star and served twice as Worthy Matron. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lemuel C. Higgins and brothers Jim and Norman Hurst. Survivors include one sister-in-law, Sallie Hurst of McGregor, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 4, 2013 at Reeder-Davis Funeral Home-Hughes Springs, with Rev. Daniel Bramlett officiating. Burial will follow at the Hughes Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Hughes Springs.

My sweet friend and sister will be missed, but Heaven is getting a special lady. Ms Gertrude was my Mom's very best friend and I know Mom's greeting her with open arms and a huge hug.
Miss Gertrude, you were our second mother for many years. I loved how you always laughed and joked with us girls on our many OES trips. I know you missed my mother so much; I know that you will be resting in Jesue but I hope you get to hug my mother for me. I was blessed to know you and I will never forget you, my sister.
