Mother Gladys Marie Hayes, known as “Big Mama”, was born April 22, 1934 in Daingerfield, Texas to Haywood and Arcella Mason along with her siblings, Rosetta Key, Edward Thomas “Fie” Mason, Hazel Mason, Mary Joyce Trigg, Charles Hood, Alvin Mason, James L. Mason and Ellen Jean Barrier.

Mother Hayes “Big Mama” was united in holy matrimony to Joe L. Hayes, on April 4, 1964, in Daingerfield, Texas. To this union eight children were born: Linda (Melvin) Lee, of Daingerfield, Pamela Nunley of Daingerfield, Gary (Beth) Hayes of Corsicana. Shelia (Tony) Turner of Daingerfield, Janius (Tony) Edwards of Daingerfield, Rickey Hayes of Mt. Pleasant, Marcus (Fannie) Hayes of Daingerfield, and La’Tonya (Jerry) Chism of Daingerfield. In honor of her brother, Edwards Thomas “Fie” and Lena Jean Mason, Big Mama and Big Daddy became surrogate parents to their nine children.

Mother Hayes united with Love Pentecostal Church under Elder James Henderson. Later this church became known as Victory Temple Church with Missionary and Brother Jackson. It is presently named New Victory Temple Church under the leadership of Pastor L.C. Webster. Mother Hayes serve in many capacities, but was best remembered as the Youth and Adult Sunday School teacher as well as being the Church Mother.

Mother Hayes was loved by all and she loved them all in return. Her love never failed. Her two favorite sayings will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew her, “Let’s be sweet y’all” and “Honey, we have to birth this baby”. Mother Hayes was an example of how godly women are to conduct themselves. She was strong in faith and an awesome prayer warrior. Daily, she prayed at 5 a.m., 12 noon, and 5 p.m. If you happened to visit or call she would invite you to pray with her. She’d say, Honey, it’s my prayer time and you are welcome to join me but this is how I get my strength”. As she witnessed to others, it was always with scripture no matter what your problem was. Even in her sickness, as she lay in hospitals, she found spiritual children that she adopted in the Lord. All who met her knew her as “Big Mama” and understood that what she told them was said with love and out of her desire for them to come to have a personal relationship with God. Mother Hayes leaves a great legacy of love and guidance as a Christian according to the word of God.

Big Mama left her earthly home on February 16, 2018. She was preceded in death by her baby, Du’Mond Mason; parents, Haywood and Arcella Mason; siblings, Edward Thomas “Fie” Mason and Mary Joyce Trigg. Her family extends to include 25 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. She loved us all and we loved her to the very end.
