Services for Ms. Honolulu Allen, 91, of Hughes Springs, will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2019 at Salem Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs. There will be a time of visitation from 5:00 until 7:00 Sunday evening at the funeral home. Ms. Allen was born May 22, 1928, in Cass County, Linden, Texas and passed away July 18, 2019.

Honolulu Givens Allen was the eighth of nine children born to Nancy Horsley givens and John Lee Givens.  She gave her life to Christ at an early age at the Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Linden.  She completed her early childhood education at the Fairview School in Linden where she excelled as valedictorian of her class.  She went on to have an equally successful transition to Prairie View A & M.  She was employed with Day and Zimmerman until attending LVN nursing school in 1977, fulfilling her desire for the care and well being of others.

Honolulu met and fell in love with M.D. Allen, Sr.;  they married on August 5, 1950. Together they raised seven sons, Ronald, M.D. Allen, Jr., Larry Allen, Roy Allen, Douglas Allen, Lawrence Allen, Timothy Allen; two daughters, Johnnye Ruth Allen Warren (Roger), Nancy Allen-Jones (Jeffery).

Relocating to Hughes Springs in 1954, she united with Hughes Chapel Missionary Baptist in Hughes Springs where she served faithfully until her health began to fail.  She loved being a member of Unity and was very active over the years serving as Chairman for Nurses of the Unity District Missionary Baptist Association and Women's Auxiliary, Committee Chairman for the Petitionary Letter for the Unity District Association, Chairperson of Education for the Unity District Congress, Director Emeritus of District #3, member of the Business and Professional Women's Club of Linden, where she was elected as Woman of the Year, member of the Pleasant Hill Quilters, and many organizations over ninety-one years, especially where it concerned her children during their formative years.

Honolulu was a Diva!  Stylish in all her ways with love of clothes and shoes, which her father used to call her "Dry Goods."  She was intelligent, witty and overflowing with wisdom.  Her smooth one liners would have you doubling over with laughter.  She loved to travel which took her as far as Israel, Hawaii, and most of the united States.  She could bake cakes that made you smack your lips.  Those cakes will truly be missed.  Her greatest treasure were her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was a phenomenal woman!

She was preceded in death by her husband, M.D. Allen, Sr; one daughter, Johnnye Ruth Allen Warren; and four sons, M.D. Allen, Jr., Larry, Roy and Timothy; and one granddaughter, Melissa; three sisters, Genora, Queen Esther and Johnnie; four brothers, Gemeny, Garnett, Glade and John.

Left to be comforted until the happy reunion at the resurrection is one sister, Hazel Jones of Los Angeles, CA; three sons, Ronald (Gertrude) of Waco, Douglas (Mary) of San Diego, CA, Lawrence (Renee) of Paris, TX, and one daughter, Nancy (Jeffery) of Hughes Springs; grandchildren, Ingrid, Aaron, Ashton, Ericka, Sonya, Renita, Marilyn, Diane, Cory, Larry, Dirshawn, Jessica, Anna, Hanan, Shenita, La'Rae, Lauren, Kim, Tim and Quintese; 33 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; two special daughters, Brigitte and Terri; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a best friend, Mattie Brown.

She was loved and will truly be missed.  To God be the glory for a life well lived.

  7. I am so proud to be a part of aunt Honolulu family. I remember the words of wisdom she shared with me over the years and the delicious home cooked meals. She always called me on my birthday . I will cherish the card she sent me last month for Father’s Day, signing ‘ Love aunt Lu, Lu’ and our talk about three weeks ago.

Precious in the sight of Lord, is the death of his saints.

    Love you Family!

  8. My thoughts and prayers are with the Allen Family as you celebrate the home-going of such a beautiful spirit! Mrs. Allen was an inspiration to me and many others. I will miss her dearly. She was always excited to see me and would ask if I saw her niece at church as we both attended Concord.

    God's Blessings!
