James Luster Harris gained his heavenly wings on August 27, 2023. James was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and community member. He touched the lives of many with his kindness, wisdom, humor, and warm-hearted nature.
Born on September 13, 1941, James grew up in Linden. He & his beloved wife Pat raised their family in the heart of Caves Springs, TX. He was a 1960 Linden- Kildare graduate and a member of the undefeated 1960 State Basketball Championship team. Later he attended Texarkana College. James worked in construction for many years & he spent countless days working on the farm & supervising the county roads of Caves Springs, TX.
It was evident to all who knew him that James was a devout Christian & was a strong spiritual influence to many friends & family.
He leaves behind a deep legacy of faith, family & fun. As a dedicated member of Caves Springs Missionary Baptist Church he served as a deacon & Sunday School teacher.
He is survived by his three children, Jami & husband Joe Monk of Linden, Lori & husband Todd Elliott of Linden, and Jason & wife Brianne Harris of Atlanta. James was known as “Popa” to his family & he leaves behind 8 grandchildren & 16 great grandchildren all who will carry forward his memory and the values he cherished. Other surviving family is brother-in-law, E.V. Wilson & sister-in-law LaJuan Harris along with several nieces & nephews.
Services to celebrate James’s life will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 31st at the Cass County Cowboy Church in Atlanta, Texas. Burial to follow at Caves Springs Cemetery, under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Linden.
There will be a time if visitation from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations are made in honor of James L. Harris to Samaritan’s Purse which was a charity close to his heart.

To Pat and the family of James Harris, please accept my most sincere condolences. James was a friend from our days as sports competitors growing up and were teammates at Texarkana College. I considered James a longtime friend and had great respect for him.
