John T. "Hump" Russell

John Traylor "Hump" Russell, 88, of Hughes Springs, was born August 28, 1933, in Cass County to George Raymond and Ruth Traylor Russell. He passed away July 4, 2022. John married Donna Jo Pracht on November 8, 1956. He was a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso. John served in the Air Force in 1953-1957 as a mechanic, he then moved to the reserves for another 4 years. John was a mechanical engineer by trade working at LTV in Grand Prairie, Texas and T&N Warehouse in Lone Star. He was a cattle rancher and poultry grower for Pilgrims Pride. John managed Holly Springs Water Supply Corp for 16 years and was also the owner and operated Holly Springs Country Store. He taught math at Ore City High School.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James Earl "Toby" Russell and Ralph Russell.

He is survived by his wife of almost 66 years, Donna Jo Russell; children, Rusty Russell and wife Kelli, Randy Russell and wife Debra, Jay T. Russell and wife Karen, David Russell and wife Robin; grandchildren, Robin Alexander, Whitney McFarland and husband Jordan, John Russell and wife Katy, Megan Koonce and husband John, Ryan Marshall and fiancé Hannah Pollock, Kristina Wilbanks and husband Jerry, Kayla Wilson and husband Greg, Kassie Kimble and husband Josh; uncle, Wayne Russell; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Springs and Windsor Place Nursing Centers and Ashley Miller with Heart to Heart Hospice for their love and care. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Heart to Heart Hospice, 203 W 20th St Suite A, Mt Pleasant, TX 75455. 

Honorary pallbearers will be David Shaddix, Billy Wayne McKinney, Freddie Dooly, Rodney Russell, Wayne Russell, Preston Currey, Floyd Currey, Dylan Kimble, Don Humphrey, John R. Russell, Andon Stambaugh and Ryan Marshall. 

Services for John will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2022 at County Line Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs. There will be a time of visitation 6:00 until 8:00 Friday evening at the funeral home.

  3. Donna and family, we are so sorry to learn of Hump’s death. Jimmy has known him since childhood and I went to school with him. We have enjoyed his friendship for many years. We send our love and are praying for you.
