John W. "Sonny" Brown

John W. "Sonny" Brown, Jr. was born April 21, 1946 to the parentage of John W. Brown, Sr. and Katherine Mason Brown in Upshur County, Texas.

He received his education at Duncan High School in Ore City, Texas. Sonny graduated from Valley View High School in 1963. After graduating, he attended Hurdis Barber College in Marshall, Texas, eventually becoming a licensed barber.

He was employed at Thikol in Karnack, Texas for several years. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force for four years on active duty and two years in the Air Force Reserves. 

Following his military service, was employed at Lone Star Steel for 35 years before his retirement.

On April 24, 1966 he married Ruby Faye Suggs and to this union one son, Timothy James "T.J." Brown, was born. 

He was preceded in death by both of his parents, John W. and Katherine Brown; and two sisters, Ruby Nell and Katie Peters. 

Left to cherish Sonny's memories are: three sisters, L. Patricia Nickleberry of Dallas, Texas, Myrtle Brown Ross of Dallas, Texas, Gwendolyn Sue (Vick) Vinson of Manhattan, Kansas; brother, Bishop Reginald Brown of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Ta Larisha Bolden; sons, T.J. Brown and Dallas Gross; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; very special friend, James Nesbitt of Longview, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. 

Services for Mr. Brown will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2022 at St. Paul Baptist Church at 100 Old Jefferson Coffeyville Road in Ore City. Burial will follow at Coffeeville Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Ore City. Mr. Brown will lie in state from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home in Ore City.
