Services for Lawrence E. Stokes 80, of Hughes Springs will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 6, 2020 at Reeder-Davis Chapel. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs. Mr. Stokes will lie in state from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A wake will be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday evening.
Lawrence E. Stokes Sr. was born September 3, 1940, in Greenville, Mississippi, to the late Courtney Stokes Sr. and Tiny Galloway Stokes, who preceded him in death.
He had two brothers Clyde Stokes Sr. and Courtney Stokes Jr., four sisters Annie Mae Stokes, Louise Stokes Foat, Blanche Stokes Rounds, and Betty J. Lee, who preceded him in death.
Lawrence attended Douglas High School in Memphis, Tennessee, Bishop College in Dallas, Texas, and University of North Texas (Masters Degree) in Denton, Texas, where he graduated with honors.
While attending Bishop College, he met and married Gussie M. Stokes on March 25, 1967. To that union was born two children.
He accepted Christ at an early age, renewed his life with Christ at Love Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, and was a faithful pastor of the Shady Grove Baptist Church of Lassater, Texas for ten years. He shared a bond with his close church family.
Lawrence was an administrator with Dallas ISD for 30 years. During retirement, Lawrence served as a proud substitute teacher and GED instructor for North East Texas Community College. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated and a past member of the Love Chapel Lodge #568.
Lawrence is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gussie M. Stokes, children: Lawrence E Stokes Jr. (Cherita Stokes) of Dallas, Texas, Karen Barnes (Albert Barnes) of Dallas, Texas, Lorina Stokes-Carter (David Carter) of Dallas, Texas. Grandchildren: Lawrence E. Stokes III of Hughes Springs, Texas, Brandon Barnes of Dallas, Texas, and LaBrittanii Barnes of Dallas, Texas. Great Grandchildren: David Carter Jr., Lawren Carter, David Davis III, and only surviving sibling Mildred Stokes of Memphis, Tennessee, longtime friend Sidney Bowen (Patricia Bowen) of Menefee, California, several nieces, nephews, and a host of extraordinary family and friends.

The last year and a half, my family took mighty blows. 1st my Uncle Clyde, then my Aunt Betty, and now my Uncle Lawrence. It saddens my heart but I know God's word. May they rest well until the Lord comes again. Peace and blessings to you all.
