Mr. Watkins was born August 21, 1931 in Hughes Springs and passed away January 5, 2016 in Lufkin, Texas. Leon was a generous retailer who owned and operated Leons in Hughes Springs for many years. Leons was not only a clothing store but a gathering place. Whether you were local or from out of town, there was always a chair available in the back and time to sit and converse over a coke or a cup of coffee. You might even find peas to shell or beans to snap that had been dropped off that day by generous members of the community. He loved people, and many joyous times were shared with members of the community. He loved the people of Hughes Springs, and gave freely of his time and efforts to serve his community as a member of many organizations such the Lions Club and as a Deacon of the First Baptist Church. He was active in the Wildflower Trails Festival and served in the U.S. Navy. He is remembered as a kind and patient man who expressed love in every aspect of his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie Ann Skipper Watkins; parents, Wilburn and Ruth Watkins; and sister, Jeanette Neel.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Tara Watkins of Lufkin; granddaughter, Analeigh Watkins; sister, Sylvia Holland and her husband Doug of Hughes Springs; nephew, Grant Holland and wife Kelly of Longview; niece, Dyan Skipper Robles and husband Ernie of Corona, California; nieces Kay Lindsay and Teresa Daniel; nephew, Mark Neel; and, sister-in-law, Sandra Flannigan and her husband George A.
