LINDEN Lerlene Vivian Faulkner Humphrey, 94, formerly of Linden, was born December 19, 1917, the eldest of five children born to Homer and Mattie Belle Faulkner, and passed away on December 13, 2012, a few days before her 95th birthday. She married Olin Humphrey in 1936, and they were married 58 years before Olin preceded her in death. She was married to Charles Tramel for 10 years after Olin passed away. She was a life-long teacher of all grades and subjects in Cass County schools, but primarily in the Linden-Kildare school district where she taught for 33 years. Mrs. Humphrey was also a member of Linden Chapter 576 Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her sons, Ross (Margie) Humphrey and Don (Bonnie) Humphrey and a grandson, Aaron Humphrey as well as two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Merle Grainger and Betty (Ray) Ransom. She was a loved and respected teacher of countless young people in the Linden area. Chosen as one of three teachers to begin the desegregation of schools in 1967, she led the way with a loving example of what being a great teacher is all about. She was an active member of and Sunday School teacher in the First Baptist Church of Linden, Texas, until she moved to Longview, Texas, where she lived her last years in the exceptionally caring and comfortable progressive care at Buckner Westminster Place, a senior living community. She will be sorely missed and remembered by all who came in contact with her. She epitomized the quote, To teach is to touch a life forever. All who knew her or wish to remember her are invited to viewing at Reeder-Davis-Schindler Funeral Home From 6 to 8pm Monday, December 17, 2012. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at First Baptist Church in Linden. Interment is in Linden Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis-Schindler Funeral Home.

  2. Ross and Don and families,Your Mother was a great teacher and was a great influence on all of her students. She was a dear friend of my Mother, Ida Max. They had many tales to tell about their communting to East Texas State University in Commerce to obtain their Masters degree. My prayers are with you during this time of sorrow. I loved her with all my heart. I have thought about her many times throughout the years and her influence on my life. I am so fortunate to have been in her class. I will cherish my memories of Ms. Humphrey forever.
