Ouida Caroline Michels

Ouida Caroline Whelchel Michels was born in Maud, Texas on September 29, 1946 to William Grady Whelchel and Katie “Kitty” Bell Johnson Whelchel. She passed away suddenly on May 10, 2018 in Mt. Pleasant, Texas after a brief illness. She graduated from Paul Pewitt High School in 1964 and married William Arnold Michels on May 29, 1967. They were married almost 40 years until his passing in 2007. She is preceded in death by several siblings: James Weldon Whelchel, Modine Whelchel Robbins, Luke “Annie” Louise Whelchel, Billy Don Whelchel(surviving wife Sharon Whelchel), Barbara Whelchel Foster, Bobby “Tudy” Whelchel(surviving wife Connie Whelchel) and Gene “Rudy” Whelchel .
She is survived by her children Stephen Arnold Michels of Lone Star, Texas; Tina Michels Kollar and husband James Kollar of Allen, Texas; Rhonda Kaye Michels of Providence, Rhode Island and Daniel Michels of Lone Star, Texas; 6 grandchildren: Nathan Michels of Nacogdoches, Texas; Catherine Nicole Michels of Garland, Texas; Aidan, Madison, Natalie and Andrew Kollar of Allen, Texas.
Ouida was very active in her community in her early years and loved volunteering for Girl Scouts with her daughters and also volunteered as a correspondent for The Ledger Newspaper in Daingerfield, Texas for several years. She also attended some college. She was also an avid reader and loved to read books. She loved all of her children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was especially close to her niece, Becky Montgomery, and a day did not go by in the near past when they didn’t talk on the phone.
Services for Ms. Michels will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 20, 2018 at Spring Hill Cemetery in Rocky Branch where she will be laid next to her beloved husband. Services are under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs.
