“There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition, and of unspeakable love.” – Washington Irving

Peggy Jean Smith, a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on June 17, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Born on February 4, 1950, in Cason, Texas, Peggy was the daughter of J.S. Smith and Mary Jane Smith.

Peggy’s journey through life was marked by dedication, love, and a genuine joy in the simple pleasures it had to offer. She graduated from Rhodes High School in Daingerfield, Texas, in 1969 and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree, in 1972, from Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. It was during her time in Houston that she married Curtis H. Traylor on July 8, 1970, and together they established their first home in the vibrant city.

As a devoted mother, Peggy cherished her children, Daryl and Shawna, and poured her heart into raising them. She found immense joy in attending their school and athletic events, cheering them on from the classroom and sidelines. Peggy’s unwavering support and love helped shape her children’s lives and left an indelible mark on their hearts.

In 1980, Peggy and Curtis made a new home in Porter, Texas, where she embraced her role as a homemaker, creating a warm and loving environment for her family. She had a gift for finding joy in the simplest of things and relished attending church services on a regular basis, spending quality time with family and friends, and engaging in spirited debates with her children about the merits of watching those memorable bad B-rated science fiction movies.

Peggy had an infectious spirit and a heart full of generosity. One of her greatest joys in life was searching for the perfect gifts to share with her loved ones. She found delight in seeing the happiness those gifts brought to their faces, a true reflection of her thoughtfulness and love.

Above all, Peggy was a devoted and adoring grandmother. Her granddaughter, Madalyn, held a special place in her heart, and Peggy cherished every moment spent with her. Madalyn was the apple of Peggy’s eye, and their bond was a source of immeasurable happiness and love.

Peggy was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents, Mottie Q & Pettie Mae Brown and Jessie & Alice Smith, and her father, J.S. Smith. She is survived by her mother, Mary Jane Smith, who was a constant source of strength and love throughout Peggy’s life. Her memory will forever live on through her children, Daryl (Eboni) and Shawna, who will carry her love and teachings in their hearts. She is also survived by an aunt, Mary Ann Whitmore of Dallas, TX.

Peggy’s siblings, Charles (Billie) Smith, Nina (Johnnie) Frazier, and Secelia (Bobby) Hodges along with her nieces and nephews, will remember her fondly as a sister and aunt who showered them with affection and kindness. Her nieces, Selandra Laabs, Monica Simpson, Jolyeane Kimble, Simone Smith-Wynne, Laketra Smith, Samantha King, and Jawanda Davis and nephews, Charles Smith, II, Tracy Gilbert, and Bobby Hodges, Jr. will hold dear the memories of their beloved aunt Peggy.

Peggy Jean Smith will forever be remembered for her boundless love, her unwavering devotion to family, and her warm, compassionate spirit. Her absence will be deeply felt, but her memory will be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in eternal peace.

In closing, Peggy truly believed in the words from John 11:25-26, that she shared with her son when he was 15 and mourning the passing of a high school classmate – “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” Though Peggy may be gone in the flesh, her memory and spirit will live on.
