Ruthary Sheppard

December 28, 1922 ~ December 28, 2016
The threading of a beautiful life began on December 28, 1922 to the parents of the late Archie Sr. and Codella Woods. At the age of 18, Ruth Sheppard journeyed to California and discovered her amazing skill of sewing, as she embarked upon the path toward success as a seamstress. Aided by her third husband, the late Ross Sheppard, Ruth launched one of the first black owned cleaners in Los Angeles.
In 2014, Ruth found her way back to Texas, where she lived with her sister and caregiver, Edvernell Moss. In a symbolic measure of her grit, Ruth requested to be taken home, in her final days, where she died within half an hour of her 94th birthday. She was preceded in death by siblings, Louaria Grant, Arterry Sanders, Archie Charles Woods, Andrew June Woods, and Clarence Speedy Woods; and one daughter, Vernetta Ann Rogers-Battiest.
Ruth is survived by three siblings, Rushie Cook of Houston, TX, Edvernell Moss of Frisco, TX and Herman Woods of Cason, TX; along with three grandchildren, Alfred Perkins Jr. and Tony Perkins of Riverside, CA and Tanya Murrell of San Bernardino, CA; and a host of great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; all of whom celebrate and honor her memory as the hem of her life was commenced on December 27, 2016.
Family and friends of Mrs. Sheppard; may you have the peace of The Comforter (1 Corinthians 1:3) to carry you through your grief; as well as the comfort of good memories as you celebrate the life of one especially strong. (Psalm 90:10)
