Warner Glenn (Joe) Shelton

Warner Glenn (Joe) Shelton, son of Hattie and Ben Shelton, of Hughes Springs, Texas, passed away March 2, 2016 after a long illness. He received an honorable discharge after serving his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He worked in San Diego, CA, at General Dynamics Astronautics as an assistant foreman on the Atlas ICBM before it was transported to Cape Canaveral and other launch sites. He had the honor of meeting the original seven astronauts. In 1962 he left San Diego with his bride and moved to Atlanta where he worked at Lockheed Martin for eight years as they were making the first C5As aircraft. After being laid off, he started his lawn service, where he met wonderful friends and treasured them all. He was a farmer at heart and was given the opportunity to have a wonderful vegetable garden and loved sharing with friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Joyce Ann Brannon, brothers, Nevile, Rufus and Spencer Shelton. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, three grandchildren, Jimmy Pope, Theresa Sullivan, Michael Pope, several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, two nieces, Sue Follis of Hughes Springs, Texas, Vickie White of Winters and nephew, Curtis Shelton, and several great nieces. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity. Celebration of his life will be Monday, March 7, 2016 at 3 oclock at H. M. Patterson Son Oglethorpe Hill Chapel where the family will receive friends at 2 oclock. A private family burial will take place at Rankin Shelton Cemetery, Hughes Springs, Texas, under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs.
