Funeral services for Mrs. Jo Evelyn Black, 94, of Hughes Springs, Texas, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 2, 2026, in the chapel of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs. Burial will follow at Harris Chapel Cemetery. There will be a time of visitation with family and friends from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in Hughes Springs.
Jo Evelyn Black was born April 29, 1932, in Marion County, Texas, to W.C. Nichols and Nona Ray Dorgan Nichols. She passed away on July 30, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, in Daingerfield, Texas.
Mrs. Jo loved sports, especially volleyball and softball, and she was a devoted fan of the Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys. She enjoyed spending time outdoors mowing her yard and was known for her outspoken, headstrong personality.
A gifted musician, Mrs. Jo sang at many funerals throughout the area over the years, offering comfort to countless families through her music. She also played the guitar and omni chord. She was a faithful member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and cherished her church family.
Above all, Mrs. Jo deeply loved her family and friends, especially her beloved grandchildren. She will also be fondly remembered for her love of watermelon. She was a fantastic conversationalist and never met a stranger.
Mrs. Jo was preceded in death by her parents, W.C. and Nona Ray Nichols; husband, Joe Black; son, Roger Black; daughter, Del Travillion; granddaughter, Lecia Zinna; twelve brothers and sister.
She is survived by her son, Delwyn Black and his wife Sylvia; sister, Lyvonne Hightower; grandchildren: April Waltman, Wiley McIntyre (Lacrecia), Heather Black, Vanessa Hood (Preston), Whitney Vallun (Bret).
Great Grand kids: Zachary Zinna, Nina Boring (Seth), Kaylin McIntyre, Preston Hood Jr, James Daniel High-McIntyre, Mia Jo Hood, Gracie Jo Vallun, Cameron, Hannahniah McIntyre, Ricca McIntyre.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to Dr. Shawna Mitchell, who was a care taker and friend for many years.
Mrs. Jo Evelyn Black leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, music, and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
