Mrs. Bennie Washington Mitchell, known to many as “Mu,” was a phenomenal woman who touched countless lives with her love, kindness, and nurturing spirit. She was born on July 9, 1935, in Douglassville, Texas, to the late Macy Washington Sr. and Margrett Ree Dickerson Washington. As a child, she attended Panhandle School, located just north of Douglassville. She was a faithful member of Waker Chapel Church of God in Christ in Douglassville, Texas, where she loved worshiping and serving the Lord.
Mrs. Bennie was a devoted homemaker who helped raise many children throughout the community, many of whom lovingly called her “Mama” or “Mama Bennie.”
She peacefully departed this life on May 10, 2026, at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Atlanta, Texas, surrounded by her loving family.
Madea was loved by many. She was well known for her good home cooking, delicious cakes and pies, and the love she poured into every meal she prepared. She also had a passion for gardening and could grow tomatoes, peas, and beans like no other. One of her favorite pastimes was fishing. Sitting on a 5-gallon bucket with her apron, shades, and cane pole, she could pull fish from the water with ease.
Mrs. Bennie was preceded in death by her parents, Macy Washington Sr. and Margrett Ree Dickerson Washington, both of Douglassville, Texas; her son, Elexander Edmond of Douglassville, Texas; and her late husbands, R.L. Mitchell and L.T. Edmond Sr. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Washington, Robert Washington, Macy Washington Jr., and Willie B. Washington; and her sisters, Doris Washington Evans and Martha Washington Warren.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Lucile Peoples of Douglassville, Texas; two sons, L.T. Edmond Jr. of Atlanta, Texas, and Willie Edmond Sr. and wife Shirley Edmond of Douglassville, Texas.
She also leaves behind her beloved brothers and sisters: Raymond Washington of Douglassville, Texas; Johnny Washington and Pearl Washington of Marietta, Texas; George Washington of Texarkana, Texas; Mabel Washington Swain of Atlanta, Texas; and Annie Washington James and Earnest James Sr. of Wichita, Kansas.
