Billy John Kenna was born October 17th, 1934, in Daingerfield, to Maxine & Jack Kenna. He passed away on April 5th, 2008 in Longview. He was a 1952 graduate of Hughes Springs High, graduating from Kilgore College and North Texas University with a degree in music and English in 1957. Mr. Kenna served in the United States Air Force and played in the Air Force Band. John was married on June 6, 1959 to Anna Gene (Jeannie) Skelton of Gladewater. Mr. Kenna taught school as a band director and English teacher from 1956 to 1996. John had a love for music, literature, poetry and art, and enjoyed building band programs around the state of Texas winning numerous awards, UIL First Divisions and Sweepstakes. Some of his most memorable students were from White Oak, Hallsville, and Menard, in which he still kept in touch. John retired to Hughes Springs in 1996 until his death. John was widowed by his wife of 41 years, Jeannie Kenna and is survived by one son, John Kenna and wife, Barbara Kenna of Liberty City; six grandchildren, Zack Kenna, 24, and Amanda Smith, 24, of Bryan, David Raygor, 22, of Houston, Joshua Raygor, 21, of College Station, Jacob Kenna, 16, of Liberty City, Sara Kenna, 14, of Liberty City.

  2. Mr. Kenna was a great band director. I knew him in White Oak in the early 60's. Although I had not seen him in years, we have been communicating by email. His poetry & kind comments to/about me were very much appreciated. I am so sorry that he is gone, but thankful now that he is with his wife, as I know he missed her much.
