Bishop Robert McCain

Services for Bishop Robert McCain, 73, of Ore City will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 12, 2021 at First United Methodist Church in Ore City. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Gilmer.
Mr. McCain will lie in state from 12:00 noon until 7:00 p.m., Thursday evening at the funeral home.
Robert McCain was born to the union of Annie and George McCain of Ore City, Texas on March 1, 1947. He was preceded in his death by his parents, daughter Kim McCain, sisters Minnie Sims, Annie Faye Owens, Esta Mae Colbert, and Gwendolyn Royal.
At an early age Robert began his walk of faith in Jesus Christ and was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Ore City, Texas under the leadership of the late E.T. Conwright. Robert graduated from Valley View High School in 1964 and would later attend Bishop College in Marshall, Texas.
Robert worked for Lone Star Steel and later in his career would become a steel union worker representative. Robert would go on to work for United States Congressman Jim Chapman who represented Texas’s 1st Congressional District in the House of Representatives. After Congressman Chapman’s term ended, Robert was appointed to work for the Texas Land Board Commission’s Oil and Gas Division to oversee Upshur County. Robert was active in the community and served as an Ore City ISD school board member for 2 terms from (1994 -1999). Robert worked for DeBerry Butane & Gas for over 40 years where he retired August of 2020.
Robert accepted his calling to minister on September 29, 2001. Robert was a minister at New Horizon Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Tim Franklin. Later, Robert would go on to start Greater Commission Baptist Church in Longview, Texas in 2003 where he pastored for over 11 years. Robert’s passion for cooking and serving others in the community led to a vision to start a food ministry that served senior citizens who were sick and disabled. With the assistance of church members, family, and friends; the food ministry would stay in operation for over 18 years. Robert was best known for his brisket, beans, and hot water cornbread.
Robert reunited with New Horizon Baptist Church in Ore City in 2015 where he served and ministered under the leadership of Pastor Barry Sims. In 2017, Robert joined the Cedar Grove Male Chorus where he continued to minister to others through songs of praise.
Robert was a member of ICF - International Church Fellowship of Houston, Texas and with continued education in theology, Robert would later become an ordained Bishop through ICF. Using his credentials, Robert taught seminar classes on evangelism and leadership.
Robert was a pillar in the community and continued to serve, counsel, and be a mentor to many prior to his passing. Robert is survived by his wife Denise McCain of Ore City, Texas, daughters Tammy Walker (Tony) of Celina, Texas, Flesha Brown of Longview, Texas, adoptive son Tommie Whitaker (Danyl) of Ore City, Texas, sisters Bettie Moon of Ore City, Texas, Mary Harris of Ruston, Louisiana, brother-in-law Dennie Timmons (LaJoyce) Fort Worth, Texas, sister-in-law Latrell Alexander (Anthony) of Balch Springs, Texas, grandchildren Logan Walker of Monticello, Arkansas, ShaDiamond Tatum and Jonniecia Brown of Ore City, Texas. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
We are sad to hear about Robert. He was our good friend, and a Christian
friend. He was so kind, and such a good person to know. We will miss him.
As Robert would say, "It's Crunch Time!".

Robert was always one to go of out his way to speak. He would help those that was in need. He practice what he preached. He would not hesitate to tell you about the good news. I know he will be truly miss. I'm sure he will hear these words (Well done my good and faithful servant- you can come on in).
