Charles "Charlie" Coppedge Smith
August 28, 1940 ~ August 4, 2017
Charles (Charlie) Coppedge Smith was born at the Smith family home place in Avinger, Texas on August 28, 1940 to Reverend Harmon and Mary Smith. Charlie was the youngest of four children and the only son. He departed this life on August 4, 2017 at The Springs Nursing Center in Hughes Springs. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Martha Sue Smith, his brothers-in-law Hugh Goodpasture, Eugene Grubbs and Jearl Hayes, his father and mother-in-law Harvey and Mary McKinney and his grandson Christopher Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years Peggy McKinney Smith, their sons: Wade Smith of Avinger, Texas; Marcus Smith of Dallas, Texas; John Smith and wife Julie of Memphis, Tennessee and Harmon Smith and wife Michelle of Atlanta, Georgia; their grandchildren (affectionately known as “Big Daddy” to his grandchildren): Shonda Smith Morris and husband Mike of Boston, Massachusetts; Ben Smith of Hughes Springs, Texas; Rikki Smith Taylor and husband Travis of Cleburne, Texas; Cadi Smith Stafford and husband Nick of Avinger, Texas; Jaton Smith Broach and husband Josh of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; Erin Smith Crow and husband Landon of Columbus, Texas; Tanner Smith of Harrison, Arkansas; Ryan Smith of Arlington, Texas; Emily Smith of Evanston, Illinois; and Michael Smith of Austin, Texas; their great-grandchildren Logan and Cameron Morris; Laney and Koen Smith; Bentley and Lincoln Taylor; Avery, Raygan, and Nash Stafford; Trevor, Blake, and Marley Broach; Macy and Josey Crow and Brantley Smith; his sisters Felicia Grubbs of Longview, Texas and Angie Goodpasture of Jacksonville, Texas; his brother-in-law Jerry McKinney and wife Dorothy of Hughes Springs, Texas and his sister-in-law Linda Lumpkins and husband Joe of Linden, Texas.
He married his high school sweetheart Peggy McKinney in 1957. He immediately began his career in the construction industry and quickly developed an expertise as a heavy equipment operator. His specialty was operating the largest cranes and making the most significant and technical lifts, often traveling around the country to perform his craft. Later, he started his own timber company and spent more than a decade as a logger. He brought core values of discipline, hard work, and attention to detail in everything he did and passed these traits on to his sons. He especially enjoyed working on special projects for his children and grandchildren.
The family offers its sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff of Elite Home Care, especially his therapist Scott Rice, Lisa Durden of Visiting Angels, Red Hatten, Samantha Jones, the staff at The Springs Nursing Center, and Heart to Heart Hospice who provided Charlie with loving compassionate care.
Services for Mr. Smith will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at Hughes Springs Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Hughes Springs Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs. There will be a time of visitation from 6:00 until 8:00 Monday evening at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you either perform an act of kindness, donate to a charity of your choice, or make a contribution to advance the research for Parkinson’s in the memory of Charlie Smith.

Cousin/Uncle Charles, I always thought you were my uncle when I was a little girl. I loved you so then and loved you so from then on. To me you were like my dad. Big blue eyes and a huge smile. I will miss you very much as will others but you are well now. Willie really loved you too and had a lot of respect for you. Love you to the max. Our daughter April still keeps up with Marcus so she alerted us to Charlie’s death. I am so very sorry for all of your loving and lovely family to be going through this. I understand completely about the ravages of Psrkinson’s disease.
So sorry to hear about Charles. Just know that I love and am praying for you.
We are long time friends of Harmon, Michelle, Ryan, Emily, and Michael and have enjoyed hearing the stories about your wonderful family through the years. The photos and music are awesome; and a beautiful tribute to Charlie. We hope you find some peace knowing he is in a better place and some comfort in reminiscing about all the wonderful memories shared that are now treasures in your heart. May the love and prayers of family and friends sustain you always. XOXOX
I am sorry for your loss of Mr. Smith. The Bible at Isaiah 33:24 tells us that in future, ‘no resident will say ‘I am sick.” and Almighty God sent us a comforter, His son, Jesus, who said at John 11:25 ”I am the resurrection and the life. The one, who exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life.’
Harmon, I am sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. I always enjoyed the stories you told about him when we were college. May the Lord be with your family in the coming days. Your family is in my prayers. Joe
Oh Peggy and boys, My heart breaks for you and the family. I can see Charlie in his signature overalls and that sheepish grin; what a fine fella he was. I watched the wonderful video and know that although he may not be here, you and the family have so many wonderful memories to cherish. May God bless you and hold you tight.
