Graveside services for Mr. David Rodney Black, Sr., age 82, of Hughes Springs, will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 5, 2025 at Harris Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs. There will be a time of visitation from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

David Rodney Black was born on September 21, 1942 at his parents home to Henry Hoyt Black and Ethel Id Wallace Black.  He passed away January 2, 2025 at his home in Hughes Springs.

David was raised in Hughes Springs and was a stand out athlete.  He graduated in 1961 from Hughes Springs High School.  After graduation, he attended Texarkana College where he majored in football.  After his 2nd year of football ended, he made the decision to join the U.S. Army in 1963.  In the army, he was stationed in Germany and held the position of Field Relay Car operator and was recognized as a sharpshooter.  In addition to serving our country, he also participated in a football program with many professional players that had been drafted.  After he was discharged from the Army, he started his career in the maintenance department working for Brown and Root, Greg Industrial and Hughes Springs I.S.D.  He retired from Hughes Springs I.S.D.

David met the love of his life in Sue Key in Gurdon, AR in 1967 and were married in April 1967.

In the early 80’s, David and Sue were  instrumental in the move and development of the now Hughes Springs Youth Association fields.  They were also awarded Citizens of the Year in 2013 for their service to our community even after their retirement.

David was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Henry Hoyt, Jr. , Richard Black; son, David Rodney Black, Jr.; wife, Sue Key Black; sister-in-law, Joyce Black; and brothers-in-law, Wayne Beals and Carlee Key.

He is survived by his daughters, and sons-in-law, Tonya and Byron Compton and Jeannie and J.C. Anderson; brother, Henry Black and his wife Mary; grandchildren and spouses, James and Allison Duke, Kelli and Richie Rumbo, Jantzen and Amanda Foster, Haley and Brandon Farmer, Colby and Sierra Anderson, Trent Anderson and Pamala Marshall; great grandchildren, Jaycee, Kellan, Hudson, Hendrix, Rylee, Trip, Kingston, Aiden, Serenity, Evie, Prinston, Easton. Aston, Keena and Jayce.; and several nieces and nephews.
