Debra (Debbie) Deniece Van Huss Skaggs, age 55, passed away at her home on Sunday, May 23, 2021.  She was born October 8, 1965 in Amarillo, TX to Donald and Fayrene Van Huss.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Fayrene Van Huss and her younger sister, Dyrika Dawn Van Huss.

Debbie is survived by her loving husband Allen Skaggs of Hughes Springs, TX; daughters Jennifer Nix of Hughes Springs, TX; Liz Griffis and husband Kendall of Daingerfield, TX; son Chris Skaggs and wife Devin of Jefferson, TX.  She was a beloved “BB” to her grandchildren Emma & Easton Nix, Parker & Adley Griffis, and numerous nieces and nephews.  Debbie also left behind a sister Danita Ellis and husband Rodney of Avinger, TX; brother David Van Huss and wife Amber of Hughes Springs, TX; half-brother, Rick Christian; half-sisters, Vonda Lenger and Lois Ann Childress; her very special friend Darlene Owens of Hughes Springs, TX, and a host of other family and friends.

Debbie was raised in Hughes Springs and is a member of the graduating class of 1984.  She attended Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, and was saved by the Grace of God  at the age of 11.  Debbie was recently retired from Hughes Springs ISD.  Starting as a Special Education Aide at the Junior High and finishing as a PIEMS clerk at the Elementary, she totaled 28 years of dedicated service.

Debbie was a breast cancer survivor of 8 years.  She was diagnosed with lung cancer June, 2020.  Despite the devastating news, her faith in Jesus never wavered.  Her special verse was Psalms 46:10, “Be Still and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”  Debbie put her trust in God, and never ceased to stop praising him during the hard fought battle.  Her testimony will forever be embedded in the hearts of those who knew her.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 2021 at First Baptist Church in Hughes Springs. Burial will follow at Shelton Rankin Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs. There will be a time of visitation from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Debbie's Scholarship Fund.

  1. I have missed my sister from work, from our morning prayers to just having a giggle about things. God took an angel back home and I hope I'm half of the woman she was during her life. You all are in my prayers.
