Donnie Alvis Middleton went home to be with the Lord on March 11, 2012. Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Hughes Springs, Texas on at 2 P.M., Thursday, March 15, 2012 with Rev. Heidi Cain officiating. Visitation with the family will be 6-8 P.M.,Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Reeder-Davis Funeral Home Donnie Middleton, affectionately known as Nunner to her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was born February 14, 1924, to Elsie and Rosa Alvis in Marion County, Alabama. After her graduation from Hamilton High School, she attended Andrew Jackson Business University in Nashville, Tennessee, on scholarship. She became engaged to Gerald Edwin Middleton, also of Hamilton, Alabama, before he shipped out for Europe with the U.S. Army at the beginning of World War II. After his discharge, the couple married on December 16, 1945, and settled in Gadsden, Alabama, where she worked as a secretary at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for eight years. The family moved to Hughes Springs, Texas in 1953, when Edwin began working with Lone Star Steel Co. in East Texas. In addition to being a wife, mother, and grandmother, Donnie worked at Thiokol Chemical Co. in Karnack, TX as secretary for the Chief of Safety and Security for 5 years. She later worked at the B.H. Hooton Insurance Agency and at Tri-Cities Insurance Co. in Hughes Springs for many years until she retired. A loving, compassionate, talented, and active woman, Donnie found her greatest joy in spending time with family, and friends, sewing, knitting, quilting, cooking, gardening, and sharing her humor and love of life with others. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Hughes Springs, the New Hope Sunday School Class, a charter member of the Modern Study Club, T.O.P.S. Club, and 42 Club. Survivors include her children and their spouses: Charles and Alison Middleton of Longview, Dr. Don and Sandy Middleton of Holly Lake Ranch, and Alice and Patrick Sanders of Hughes Springs; a brother, Junior Alvis and his wife Quilla, and a sister, Ezma Hall, all of Hamilton, Alabama, and a sister-in-law, Flora Alvis of Glencoe, Alabama; grandchildren Gerald Middleton of Melissa, Texas; Amanda Middleton Wilkinson and her husband Mike of Farmersville, Texas; Donna Middleton Robinson and her husband Gain, Joshua Middleton and his wife Katie, Caroline Middleton Tyler , and Emily Middleton, all of Little Rock, Arkansas; Ricky Gammill and his wife Mandy of Hughes Springs; Brett Fletcher and his wife Darcie of Henderson; Todd and Josh Fletcher of Indianapolis, Indiana; Sean Sanders and his wife Shelly of Mt. Pleasant, Shane Sexton and his wife Christina of Austin; Tracy Sexton and his wife Shelley of Fort Smith, Arkansas; ; 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is greatly loved and will be forever missed. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, Hughes Springs, TX.

  1. Deepest sympathy to each of you in your loss. Your mother was a treasure and I am grateful for the privilege of knowing her. She was a wonderful role model and encourager. I count her as one of the 'lights' that God placed alongside the road of Life to show the way. Many have been the beneficiaries of her humor and wisdom. "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade" ~ the first time I saw this was on her refrigerator! Lovely lady! She will be missed!

  11. Charlie, Don, and Alice, so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. Charlie, I tried to share with you all I could from my experience with my own mom. The last years are often trying ones.I trusted incorrect information about the visitation that said it was Thursday night (tomorrow.) I was planning to come, but I just checked the website and now find myself writing this during the funeral service. Please know that my sincere thoughts and prayers are with you all and that I hope to see you soon. STEVE

Dear Charlie & Alison and family, We are sorry to hear that you lost your mother, but we know that she and Mrs. Hooten are having a fine visit in heaven.It sounds like Charlie got his sense of humor from his mom. I wish I had had the opportunity to know her better. She was a very wonderful influence on her children as well as her grandchildren. God bless your family as you go through these sad days.
