Doris M. Thomas, 86, of Hughes Springs, Texas, passed away on February 12, 2025. She was born on August 24, 1938, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, to H.W. and Rosa Withers.
A devoted and faithful woman, Doris lived her entire life guided by her love for God. She never pushed her faith on others, but instead, she lived it through her kindness, prayers, and unwavering love. She was a light to all who knew her, always carrying a charming smile, even in times of hardship. A dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, she found joy in caring for her family and those around her.
Doris met the love of her life, John Samuel Thomas, in West Texas, where he was working in the oil fields. They married on March 29, 1957, and shared nearly 68 wonderful years together. Throughout their marriage, she followed him wherever his work led, before they eventually made their home in Hughes Springs. Together, they owned and operated Thomas Feed Store and Quick Mart, where she exemplified hard work and dedication. She was a longtime member of Daingerfield First Pentecostal Church, where her faith continued to shine.
She was the last of seven siblings and was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers and sisters: Ottis Withers, Skeet Withers, H.W. Withers, Andrew Withers, Dorothy Mahaffey, and Mattie Jean Kolojacko, along with their spouses.
Doris is survived by her beloved husband, John Thomas of Hughes Springs; her son, Jonathan Marc Thomas and his wife, Aprile, of Hughes Springs; her cherished grandchildren, John Samuel Thomas III (“J.T.”) and Jayden Mellissa Thomas (“J.J.”), both of Hughes Springs; brother-in-law, Charles Thomas of Cornett; sister-in-law, Mrs. David Thomas of Cornett; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at Cornett Methodist Church, with burial following at Cornett Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs. A time of visitation will take place from 1:30 p.m. until service time at the church.
The Thomas family wishes to extend special thanks to the Danny and Genice Parvino family, Chris and Lynn Robertson family and the James and E. Brady family. Doris leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and kindness. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered by those whose lives she touched.
Aunt Doris was truly loved by all.
