HUGHES SPRINGS- Funeral services of Fronzell Mathis, Sr., 80, of Longview, formerly of Avinger, will be 11:00 A.M., Friday, January 27, 2012 at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church of Ore City with Dr. Oney D. Fitzpatrick, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home, Inc. Mr. Mathis was born June 25, 1930 in Cass County and passed away at a Hughes Springs nursing center. He was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church of Avinger and attended Duncan School where he graduated in 1946. He excelled in both academics and athletics. He also attended Bishop College, then located in Marshall. Mr. Mathis was employed at Lone Star Steel for 35 years. He was a man of many talents, particularly in art and music. He was preceded in death by five children, Vivian Traylor, Rufus Mathis, Inetta Hopkins-Mathis, Tronderlyn Roberson and Fronzell Mathis, Jr.;and two brothers Charlie Mathis and Doris Mosley. He is survived by four children Robert Mathis and Elaine Harris both of Dallas, Sherea Clark of Marshall and Carolyn Chism of Atlanta, GA; one brother Edward Minneweather of Jackson, Mississippi; and one sister Eloise Hawthorne of Beaumont; 18 grandchildren Rodney Mathis (who was devoted to the care of his grandfather until his passing)Edward Chism and Princeton Chism all of Avinger; Marcus Clark of Tatum, Brittany Clark of Marshall, Ashley Mathis of Longview, Latrice Harris, Vinson Mathis, Mercedes Mathis and Terrence Mathis all of Dallas, Shemeca Mathis, Rosalyn Hopkins, Joyful Hopkins and Lee Andrew Hopkins all of Longview,Carla, Jessica, Brittany and Carl Roberson, Jr. all of Lone Star; numerous great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
