Genie Mae Penny

genie penny
A sweet smile faded when Genie Mae Watson Penny passed on Monday, July 25, 2011, in Texarkana. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt, friend and neighbor. Genie Mae was born to Mancil McGuffin and Dessie Lena Watson, graduated from Hughes Springs High School in 1943, and married Olan Alfred Penny in 1944. Their home was blessed with seven children. Genie Mae worked for Taylor Publishing and Lone Star Ammunition until pursuing her lifelong dream of earning an LVN degree. She began her nursing career at Linden Municipal Hospital and retired from the Texas Department of Health in 1993 As a longtime resident of Linden, she was a pillar of the community. She spent her last years at Cornerstone Methodist Retirement Center in Texarkana. While at Cornerstone, Genie Mae enjoyed listening to religious radio programs and taking weekly trips to the beauty parlor to maintain her trademark polished red nails and beautiful hair. Genie Mae was a devout Christian and her unfailing love for the Lord was visible through her meek and quiet spirit. She attended Mill Creek Baptist Church for decades where she served as treasurer. She dearly loved her family, both immediate and extended, with every fiber of her being. Her family was constantly assured of this love by all the delicious food, time, and continuous encouraging words she shared with them. Genie Mae was sincerely and profusely loved by the spouses of her children and she thought of them as her very own. She was a glorious cook and an exceptional listener. Her greatest joy in life was caring for her family and others whom God placed in her life. Without the expectation of reward, Genie Mae never hesitated to sacrifice for others. The testament of her life will be all the lives she touched and enriched. Genie Mae Watson Penny will truly be missed by all who knew her. Genie Mae was preceded in death by her parents, her brother M. M. (Buddy) Watson, Jr., her sister Oleta Watson Barker, and the father of her children, Olan Alfred Penny. She is survived by her three daughters: Linda Penny and David Staton of Linden; Joyce Penny and Coy Sevier of New Boston; Connie Penny and Mack Skipper of Sachse; four sons: James Penny and Susie Ingram of Linden; Larry Penny of Linden; Tony and Mary Penny of Lawrenceville, Georgia; Gary and Shari Penny of Richardson; 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, three nieces and one nephew.
