Funeral services for Hubert Morris Mathis, Sr., 86, of Hughes Springs will be Sunday, August 29, 2010 at 2:30 PM at Reeder-Davis Chapel in Hughes Springs with Pastor Tim Wade officiating. Burial to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Hughes Springs. Mr. Mathis was born to James Gordon and Janie Nash Mathis on April 10, 1924 in Maud, TX and passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2010 in Longview, TX. Mr. Mathis was a US Army Veteran during WWII, owned and operated Mathis Motors for 35 years, and was a member of Church of God in Prophecy in Maud. Survivors include his wife of 68 years Nellie Myers Mathis; two sons and one daughter-in-law Morris Mathis, Jr of Hughes Springs and Jason and Tammy Mathis of Ore City; two daughters and sons-in-law Shirley and Joe Lowery of Jenkins and Terry and Steve Cowan of Daingerfield; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters. Mr. Mathis will lie in state on Saturday, August 28th and the family will receive friends from 6-8 PM at the funeral home in Hughes Springs.

  3. Mr. Hubert was a great friend for may years. I looked up to him and his philosophy. Me purchased many parts from my business in the 1980's. I always enjoyed his visits very much. He was always such a positive and a joy to visit with. My prayers go to the family. He was a great person and will be missed.

  5. We were sorry to hear about Mr. Mathis. He was a hard worker and a fine gentleman. I remember him from when the washateria was right next door to his shop. I am really going back in time. Morris and Shirley, our hearts go out to you and your whole family at this sad time for you.
