Funeral services for Mr. Slaughter will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Reeder-Davis Chapel in Hughes Springs. Burial will follow at Hughes Springs Cemetery. The family will receive visitors, at the funeral home, an hour prior to the service. On Wednesday, March 14, 2012, Ira Talbot Tab Slaughter passed away in Linden, TX. Tab was born in Menard, TX to Fred and Edna Slaughter on August 19, 1915. He was a U.S. Army WWII Veteran who proudly served his country in the North African and Italian campaigns from 1940-1945. He moved with his wife, Merle Dudley Slaughter, to Hughes Springs where they raised their family. Tab retired as a foreman from the Lone Star Steel Ore Mines in 1978. After retirement he and his wife enjoyed many of their favorite pastimes such as hunting, traveling, and landscaping. He was also an impressive gardener, growing over acre of fresh vegetables which fed, not only the entire family, but neighbors, friends, and anyone else who happened to drop by. No one who complimented him on his garden would walk away empty handed. He was also a very proud member of American Legion Post #351 of Hughes Springs. Working actively on the establishment of the Veterans Memorial in the Spring Park and participating as a member of the Auxiliary Honor Guard were two of his most treasured activities. Tab was preceded in death by his wife, Merle Slaughter of Hughes Springs, his parents, his 3 sisters and daughter-in-law. Tab is survived by his children, Gerald Anthony Tony Slaughter of Corpus Christi, TX, Gary Slaughter and his wife Marla of Allen, TX, Les Slaughter of Hughes Springs, TX, and Marsha Slaughter of San Mateo, CA; 5 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Reeder-Davis Funeral Home of Hughes Springs on Saturday, at 1pm, with the burial immediately following at the Hughes Springs Cemetery. The family requests that any memorials be sent to the First Baptist Church of Hughes Springs or American Legion Post #351 of Hughes Springs.
