James Morris McGary

James Morris McGary was born July 30, 1938 to the parentage of P.G. McGary, Sr. and Gurtis R. McGary in Douglassville, Texas. He accepted Christ at an early age. He was a member of St. John Baptist Church. James received his formal education at Panhandle High School in Douglassville, Texas. He graduated Northwestern University in Illinois. He worked in transportation management for Walgreen’s, Pepsi-Cola, Grocery Supply, Shepp’s, and Freedman Distributers. He spent many years as a truck driver and was proud to be the first black man in Houston with a Transportation Degree.

He was preceded in death by his parents, P.G. McGary, Sr. and Gurtis R. McGary; brothers, P.G. McGary, Jr. and Benjamin F. McGary; son, Johnathan B. McGary; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John D. and Mary R. Solis; Mary Jane Solis and Manuel L. Solis.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and caring wife, “Terri” Teresa McGary, he loved being a husband and the “bossman”; children, Michael Young of Dallas, Texas, April McGary of Arlington, Texas, Sonja Carter (Darrell) of Chicago, Illinois, Shivon Todd of Hawaii, Kimsheka (Chanti) of Houston, Texas; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings, Dora Watson of Douglassville, Texas, Josephine Hamilton (Henry) of Tyler, Texas, Jerome McGary (Harriet) of Texarkana, Texas, Diane McGary of Chicago, Illinois, Theresa Soloman of Atlanta, Texas, Donald McGary (Alma) of Kuwait City, Helen Lucas (Bernard) of Los Angeles, California, Wanda Wells of Rowlett, Texas; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Elvera Solis of Rock Island, Illinois, Donald J. Solis (Rose) of Milan, Illinois, Victor G. Solis (Judy) of Davenport, Iowa, Frank M. Solis (Linda) of Rock Island, Illinois, Joseph F. Solis (Kathy) of Silvis, Illinois, Linda M. Solis of Rock Island, Illinois, Maria Johnson (David) of Madison Heights, Michigan, Michael A. Solis (Karen) of Davenport, Iowa, Natalie Solis of East Moline, Illinois; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Services for Mr. McGary will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Reeder-Davis Chapel, under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral home in Linden.
