Born in: Linden, Texas
Resided in: Linden, Texas

James “Jimmy” Simmons entered the gates of heaven on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 80, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on February 5, 1944, in Linden, Texas, to Luther and Ruby Simmons, Jimmy lived a life full of joy, laughter, and devotion to those he loved. A proud graduate of Linden-Kildare High School in 1962, Jimmy answered the call to serve his country in the U.S. Army before embarking on a dedicated career. He worked for Lone Star Steel for many years before joining the Texas Department of Transportation in 1987, where he made lasting friendships and retired after 21 years in 2008.
Faith and family were the foundation of Jimmy’s life. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Linden, and a devoted deacon at New Colony Baptist Church for 46 years, where he was a faithful member of the church choir. Jimmy shared 60 beautiful years of marriage with his precious wife, Linda. Together they had two wonderful sons, Derek and Lance Simmons. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and a proud granddaddy to four grandchildren.  Jimmy was a steadfast presence in their lives, cheering them on at every sporting event and making them laugh with his unmatched sense of humor. Jimmy truly enjoyed life and always had a friendly smile to share and a story to tell.  He’d get a twinkle in his eyes and a little smile on his face when he was about to say something funny, and he truly said the funniest things.

Jimmy lived life to the fullest, whether he was hunting, fishing, playing golf, working in his garden, or watching sports. His kind heart and friendly smile left an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Ruby Simmons; two brothers, William Lynn and Byron Simmons; a brother-in-law, Donald Williams; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, JoAnn and Joe Pixley.

Jimmy is survived by his beloved wife, Linda; two sons and their wives, Derek and Jennifer Simmons of Linden, and Lance and Deanne Simmons of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Logan (Amie) Simmons, Landon (Emily) Simmons, Parker Simmons, and Alyssa Simmons; a sister, Martha Williams of Linden; and two sisters-in-law, Barbara Simmons of Manchester, TN, and Doris Simmons of Marshall.

  1. Candle 2Jimmie always made my family and me feel welcome. I loved the way he would always help out with the food (and hid a piece of pie above the fridge or in the cabinet!) He will be greatly missed.

  2. I am so sorry for the loss of one great guy. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.

  3. Candle 5Jimmy was a classmate of my brother, Perry Max. I know they are rejoicing up in Heaven. My condolences to Linda and the family. Remember all the memories . May God’s hands wrap around you during this time. Nancy Max Belford.

  4. Wheaties and Funzy will be ready for the best hunting trip known to mankind. The number of times I heard about the trip to Kansas with Jimmy Simmons and Funzy Jones.. hilarious! May he rest in the arms of our Lord.
